744 Question

For WSP Portsmouth 8/6 I ran....

4022>V2>AD2K (Digital In) > 744 24/96
ccm4>744 (Using the 744's pre and a/d) 24/96

I thought that it would record two sets of files (one set of files for each set of mics).  Well when I get home and dump them to the HD Wavelab 5.0 wont open them.  I open them in CDWAVE with no problems.  Well after looking at the file properties in windows it seems that the 744 recorded it as a 4 channels.  Is there a way to pull apart these 4 channels and make two different recordings ie B&K and a Schoeps?  Also after the show we listened to each set of mics using the headphone jack to compare sources and could tell that there are two sources.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing you can do, editing wise, until you get a software program that will open up four tracks.  J. Pollock had the same issue with his, so now he records 4 separate tracks and opens them up in his program of choice.

I'd PM (jimmyrow) him to get more details.

what about trying to open in a program more suited to multitracking like adobe audition?  what's the file extension on this file type?

If you have a windows 98 or ME machine, you can download the free version of protools and it may allow you to seperate the channels. 

You might also try sox.  I know that you can use sox to make a 2 channel wave file a mono file but I'm not sure if it properly handles more than 2 channels.  It should be easy enough to try and it will run on any linux or windows machine.

i am guessing that i need a multi-track program, but i don't know where to start.

i am just needed the push in the right direction, and it'll be easy.

I have Nuendo 3 but I've never done it so I can't walk you through it. If someone would send me the mix they have I can tackle it and see what comes from it. However, as it stands I have the software but no one is willing to send me the files. Ill send you the 8 dvds if that's the problem.

Vegas 6.0 has worked for me... Sleepypedro got me started on it and opening all 4 tracks individually, joining them at the breaks, and then mixing is not too hard.

It works with Soundforge and will allow you to export or drag n drop a file after mixing.

I am new to this portion of things but Vegas is pretty easy to find I believe..

i'll try it out, and report on my findings.

EDIT: it installs easy enough, but the files that I'm working with with a WAV file type, aren't opening in this application.
i guess it has to do with the fact that it isn't a BWF file, but i'm gonna try it a few different ways.

EDIT 2: audacity is the ticket!  i can split the 4ch WAVs or merge them to output 2ch!!
if you merge the file down to 2ch, then you need to reduce the gain on each recording, as it seems to add the levels.

so now i can get this to work, thanks for everyone's help, and stay tuned for a nice torrent.

zee - i can upload your source by itself from the 5th or 6th, or just the mix (all at 24/96), just give me a few days to finish the work up.
