Foam vs. Mesh windscreens? (Nak 300 content)
« on: August 25, 2005, 01:30:00 AM »
My Tascam mics have both foam, and metal windscreens (like the Nakamichi 300)

Does anyone think one of these options sounds better...?

And, is one more effective with wind than the other?

I've been using the foam sceens with good results.

I'm curious about this myself.  I only have the metal ones with my Naks.

I would have to say the stock Nak/Tascam screens are pretty much useless in the wind(experience). Stocks may be good for indoors(protection from falls and or smoke). I used the large DPA's for my 300's, with good wind protection and the big Shures for real high winds.

I always considered the wire mesh as more of a pop screen since it's worthless as a wind screen. Wire mesh with whatever that finer inside material is does nothing to abate wind. Go with the foams if you want to cut out wind noise. The mesh is only good for taking the pops out when used as a vocal mic.
