Good CD-quality audio paired with small size is the goal.

For use with what gear?

IMO, the SBM-1 (or modSBM-1) is a great option.  Some also like the AD-20, though it's a pre and ADC.  If you're open to changing recorders, I don't think there's a better sounding / smaller package than the M1 / D100.

M-Audio still makes the Flying Calf - it is easily powered by 9V batteries.

You shouldn't have to pay more than 50-100 bucks for one...not really sure if these are still in production - but they show on ebay regularly...

Drawbacks would be:

Truncation to 16 bits (unless you are using a laptop - then no problem) The truncation is not obvious to the ear - but I think properly dithered signals sound better...IMO (at least with 20 bit model you are only truncating 4 bits...)

No gain control - these devices are made to driven by an upstream preamp or mixer...

Sure, but they're usually bundled with a recorder at that point.  Why not swap out your existing recorder for an M1 / D100 - sounds great, nice and compact, problem solved.
