That's odd, AT already came out with omni's for the 853's and they didn't need adapters.  Maybe you're talking about the 933's or the 943's which require an adaptor to use the 853 caps?

So, does anyone know if the capsules/bodies are compatable?  Alot of us have got a significant investment () in AT853 gear.  Myself I've got something like ten various capsules and three different sets of mics!

The new UE-x capsules are compatable with the older unipoint series mics.  I read it somewhere on the AT site a week or so ago.  Don't know if the older capsules are compatable with the new bodies (don't remember them saying so, but the threads must match if the new capsules fit the old bodies). 

Also, there are probably omnis still available, but only white in color.  I doubt that the new UE-x capsules will be seen for $28 (like good ol' alpha s&l), so you might want to check on the 'older' omni capsules while they last (if they haven't sold out yet).  Discontinued doesn't necessarily equate to unavailable. Hi.  I just got off the phone with AT Tech Support (Todd).  He said new and old models are interchangeable, both the elements and the bodies.  Great!  He said the specs have improved *a bit* and they've added some RF rejection (was that a problem with anyone before?).  It looks like they'll be a little cheaper too, at least at $200 (street?) compared to about $250 list for the old Unipoint.  Hmm. I wonder if the old Unipoint will go any lower than $145 (Alpha sound and lighting).  Have to watch for that.

By the way, the '853s are "gold sputtered" diaphrams, 2 microns.  That must be why they sound so good compared to other electrets.  I asked about the AT2020, entry level studio cardioid.  This is electret, but not gold sputtered.  It still got good reviews thouh.

AT933/943 are the smaller diameter bodies/caps (around 8mm diameter), while AT853 are the bigger size (approx 12mm diameter).  I believe 933 are the older version of the small caps, while AT943 are the newer version.

Anyway you can get adapters to fit '853 caps onto 933/943 bodies.  But not the other way around.

By the way, I was surprised to learn that 853 caps also fit on AT831 bodies too!  The bodies are somewhere in between, maybe 10mm diameter, but the caps have the same thread.  It is probably not officially compatable, but it appears to work.  So if anyone out there has *any* of the bodies (933/943, 831, or 853), go ahead and try some 853 caps.  I guess the newer caps are fair game too, though the prices may be higher.  Another thing, it is only subjective, but my impression is that 831 caps are not as good as the 853s.  I have not tried the (smaller) 933/943 caps yet, but I'm guessing 853 will sound better.

I have the subs for the 853s.  I've actually only ran them with the adapters/943s but was very pleased with the sound.

those are my next ones too... although i am contemplating the new uline guns... i just think they look cool... i am not sure what kind of sound i will get out of them though.
