Newbie question on SBM...

I've been using a M1 and a set of CSSC. Recently acquired a SBM but when I tested them during the encore of a concert I got brickwalling (no "over" light on the SBM). Recording is great (first song is acoustic) but when the band re-started rocking, brickwalling appears. What am I doing wrong? Please advice!

how did you feed the sbm?  if you went mic in, that is why you brickwalled, feeding line in can assist with that

yeah you definitely wouldn't be brickwalling line in.

FWIW, I think Oade offers a mod to improve the mic-in circuitry if you plan to use the sbm-1 in this manner.  You might be better served to get a separate battery box/pre-amp and feed the sbm-1 line-in like Nick said.

So you mean I need to go via the line in jack?
What about the mic att switch? or the mic/line in switch?

the mic att doesn't matter if you go line in.  IIRC, there is no switch between mic/line in, but if there is, obviously it should be set to line in.  Are you plugging the mics directly into the unit?

Yep (CSSC > SBM > M1)...another mistake, perhaps?

 well, the problem is line-in will not provide power to the mics.

I think you are either going to have to get a battery box to power the mics, or see if Oade can modify the unit for you.  Battery box is probably the way to go here...

So then you do have a battery box?  That's why I asked.  You should be fine going line in.  At least, try it and see what kind of levels you get with the sbm-1.

if you are going in the mic jack use the 20 db mic att switch and watch your levels and you should avoid brickwalling but for truly trouble free recording go line in and tape your SBM down on 10 and you won't have to worry about levels at all but you will need to do a little post work to get levels up for cd burning
