AKG KM 235 T-bar question
« on: September 27, 2005, 10:54:03 AM »
So I am in the process of putting my new stand together last night and ran into a problem.  Here's what i got:

Impact Air-Cushioned Heavy Duty Light Stand - Black, 9.5'
http://tinyurl.com/752rd

Bogen 3102 5/8" F Stud to 3/8" M Thread
http://tinyurl.com/bucbm

Bogen 3/8" F Thread to 5/8" M Thread
http://tinyurl.com/7azc7

AKG KM 235 Stereo Mounting Bar
http://tinyurl.com/98cm3

Everything went smooth until i tried to screw the AKG bar onto the Bogen 3/8 -> 5/8 adapter.  I do not believe that the threads on the AKG bar are indeed 5/8-18.  Are they 16mm fine thread or something?  I went by the local hardware store this morning and tried to screw a 5/8-18 bolt into the AKG bar and it would not go.  Has anyone else run into this problem??  Thanks!

Yea i thought it would work fine too, but the akg bar will thread on the adapter just a little and then it got really tight like it is cross threading.  And it discourged me that the 5/8-18 bolt would not screw into the akg bar either.  I unscrewed one of the mic adapters from the end of the bar and it threaded into the middle hole on the agk like butter.   ???  Trying to match the mic adapter from the akg to the bogen adapter and the threads just dont match...

Does the bogen adapter thread fine into the right or left side of the AKG bar properly?  Maybe got a bad adapter.  I have used numerous similar 5/8 adapters when i had my akg bar

No, it will not thread in any hole of the akg bar.  Maybe the adapter is bad?  What do you think the chances of me finding one of these adapters locally would be?  Check camera supply shops maybe?  Thanks for your time!  I would +T ya if i could!

Out of curiosity, are you able to thread the t-bar all the way on the bushing, or does it get to a point and then stop?

I was browsing the B&H website and also found this bushing:

Gitzo Bushing:

I wonder if I might have better luck with that one?  My obsessive compulsiveness will make me find a solution to this, it has to be purrfect!   ;D

the 2 parts i use came with my tbar from soundpros
its this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=5596&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation
followed by the same 3/8 > 5/8 you have

and yes the 3/8 > 5/8 will screw all the way down/thru -- i can start it at either side and screw it untill it falls out the other
(of course on the actual stand it only goes down so far till it hits the flange)

I think that I have a bad adapter.  I have ordered that Gitzo Bushing from B&H and hopefully that will solve this problem.  FWIW, I think that the 5/8" "Microphone thread" is NOT the same as a fine thread 5/8"-18 bolt.  That would explain the bolt not threading in the akg bar.  And the threads not matching between the Bogen 3/8->5/8 bushing and the mic adapter would lead me to believe that i have a bad 3/8->5/8 bushing.

I will post back here for completeness when i get that new adapter.  Thanks for your help!

This is true.  The standard mic thread is 5/8"-27.
