SP AT853 vs AT853a vs AT853rx vs AT853p
« on: October 05, 2005, 01:04:57 PM »
i have seen lots of people talk about these mics and just wondering what the main difference is?

i have a pair of the soundpros at853 and like them -- but i really don't know how much they might be alike or different from he others
it seems as though the one big difference is what they are intended to record, rather it be speech, music whatever -- is that right?

based on searching around i also see they have Uniline versions but i have never really seen those talked about much here
thanks

From my understanding, the SP models are powered differently than the stock AT models.  The different AT models just come with different power modules (that have different roll-off values, different shapes, battery power capability or no battery power capability, etc.)  The specs for the AT 853 models only differ in the roll-off values (which is based on the power module that comes each version) from what I have seen.  There is no difference in what they are intended to record from what I've seen.

fwiw, at853a are the ones that can be run on batteries.  all other versions are p48 only.

so the SP and the "a" are the closest in that reguard

Yes, however, I think the SP's may sound better on battery power than the AT853a's do.  Never ran my AT's on battery power, but it's been reported that the results are subpar.

i would agree if using just the 1.5v that the at853a gets from the at8531 power module.  however, if you have 9v running into the mics, they should be the same.  i have enjoyed the pulled i got from my at853a with a modified spsb-7.  that said, running them phantom is a whole other league.

So what is the story on this modified spsb-7 you speak of?  Is it meant for use with the AT brand (i.e. Non-SP) that terminate into mini xlr's?

yeah, i had chris from sp custom the box with mini xlr inputs.  i wish they could have built in some gain, but oh well.
