microtrack beta 1.2.0 issues last night
« on: November 24, 2005, 12:12:04 PM »
my email to tech support:

So I'm very disappointed in the new firmware upgrade.  I was taping My Morning Jacket last night via the spdif connection on my Apogee Mini-Me.  I booted up the Microtrack, set it to record spdif, 24 bits, and Auto smaple rate.  I had freshly formatted my 6GB Hitachi Microdrive as well.  The unit reported an hour and 46 minutes of total record time.  I thought that was a little odd, but went with it.  At the encore break, I started a new recording figuring that I would get the full 2GB allotment that I should have on a freshly formatted card.  Instead, I got whatever was left from that original 1:46.  Needless the say, the show ran over that time, but here is where it gets interesting.  The Microtrack reported that the media was full, and stopped recording like it should have.  It would NOT let me create a new file since it thought the media was full.  Fine, I rebooted in the middle of a smokin' version of Run Thru.  Same thing.  Media full.  Reboot again.  This time, it gives me an hour and 55 minutes of record time, starts the file, and off we go.  Why would it do that?  Honestly, I can deal with the 2GB limit issues for now.  I had NO issues with the past firmware other than the levels going haywire, but I could deal with that too since the recording was fine.  But this new issue is completely unacceptable and needs to be resolved with the utmost quickness.  It rendered an otherwise good audience recording fairly useless.  Thanks for your time, and happy holidays.

Sincerely,
Jon Ice

Did you format the microdrive since your last show?

edit: looks like someone else had this same issue - http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=54534.msg713929#msg713929

i'd like to know why people are still using this product for mission critical work when it's more than proven to not be roadworthy yet?

don't lose sight of the fact that this is still very much a BETA product/firmware.  there's no way they've tested the new release out with all possible hardware combinations, so we're all guinea pigging their product for them in the field.  enough people have been stung by now -- how many more partial / lost recordings have to be made before folks stop using them in a production environment?

i own one, and have since the first day it was released.  but guess how many times i've run it without a backup?  once.  we lost an opening set by a crap opening band.... and i vowed to the r1 it would never play second fiddle.  :-)

wise up!

Unless I'm getting paid for recording, none of the recording I do - and I would argue anyone else here - is "mission critical".  I get your point, though, about recordings one really, really wants to capture.  At any rate, I'm still using mine because

<1>  I'm aware of my device's idiosyncrasies and the steps I need to take to prevent problems from arising
<2>  I haven't encountered any "mission critical" failures yet
<3>  it seems there's often another taper present on whom I may rely as a backup

wise up!

The ability to affordably capture 24-bit and <1-3> above make my decision easy:  keep running!  Whether that's wise or not, well...I don't know, but it works for me.

I recorded Polytoxic's Version of "THe Last Waltz" last night in Denver with the new firmware, 4gb CF. 24/48 out of my V3, SPDIF Two sets about 1:45 minutes each. All seemed to go well. I'm downloading it right now. I'll see how if it all went.

Edit: It sounds great.

Did you get a complete copy (from dat or laptop backup?) Jon? I got all but a 10 second dropout during the first song at 16/44.1 on my JB3 and all but the first song and encores at 24/48 (laptop battery died). I was hoping to patch that 10 seconds from your source if possible.

Sorry to hear all these problems with the MT. Hope they get everything worked out. I'd love one of those little buggers to work perfectly.
