Hi-MD: MZ-RH910 vs MZ-RH10
« on: December 09, 2005, 10:27:44 AM »
Hi, here's another newbie..

So far I only know one difference in the recording quality of those two models by Sony.
The MZ-RH10 has "ATRAC TYPE-S DSP" for recording in SP & ATRAC3-modus as only extra. But I plan to record in lossless PCM modus anyway so this isn't importand then, is it?

Interesting but less relevant is that the less expensive MZ-RH910 has a bit longer recording battery life, because it doesn't use the neat OLED display (i presume).

But what I was wondering is this: Have the two models the same hardware, so the same amount of recording noise ? I want to use it for field recording like city sounds or silent places in nature. So noise is an importand factor. I have owned a Sharp MD-DR470H but hardly used it becouse the mic input was way too noisy.

I own an Audio Technica AT822 microphone (but am thinking about getting smaller ones to easily care them with me all the time).
If the noise is more than in this home recording, I won't buy any at all: http://www.mdbsite.com/z/birds.mp3

Or should i consider another Hi-MD model ?

Thanks for any help or info,
Michiel

According to Sony, this is incorrect.  Here are the specs:

MZ-RH910
typical street price $170
manual found at http://www.docs.sony.com/release/MZRH910.pdf
battery is NH-10WM
record HI-MD continuously for 4 hours (see manual p. 20)

MZ-RH10
typical street price $230
manual found at http://www.docs.sony.com/release/MZRH10.pdf
battery is NH-14WM
record Hi-MD continuously for 5.5 hours (manual, p. 20)

The two machines have identical mechanism for recording.  The
RH10 gets my vote for longer battery life and the cool electroluminescent
display.  It's much easier to read than the LCD display on the RH910.

You might want to consider a mic more sensitive (higher output) microphone.

Hm, I had the specs from the Dutch site (see links on the names in startpost).
It says:

MZ-RH910 - recording in normal SP-modus (u) 9.0
MZ-RH10 -  recording in normal SP-modus (u) 8.0

other formats are also longer (recording in PCM is not mentioned). If if they even have differend batteries, and the original PDF manual tells differnd, I presume the Dutch info is incorrect.

@ zowie: The AT822 is allready very sensitive, if I'm not mistaken. But I'll have to search a lot for nice little clip-on mics I'm affraid.
