good travel cases for mics?
« on: December 10, 2005, 07:12:15 AM »
I'm putting together a xmas list here and I'd like to find a good, road tested case for carrying mics.  I have one of those heavy duty looking locking flight cases in mind but I can't find enough details on the sites I was looking through to get a lock on a specific model that would be perfect.  So if anyone can suggest a sweet Anvil style flight case for a pair of mics to travel in I'd appreciate it.  Also if anyone has other suggestions they're welcome.  Please provide a link or specific product information.  Thanks people!

Pelican cases.  Available at a huge number of online retailers, as well as some local shops, Google/Froogle to find the right size at the best price for your mics.

for the MGs???pelican 1060. Its what I use. you can fit the mics (with one pair of caps on them) and an additional pair of caps.
get the case, and there is a pre-perforated foam called pluck and pull that you insert in the case and pick out the holes for the mics. Pelican makes the foam too. Case is about 20 dollars with foam.

You can also find good options at a local store similar to "The Container Store" which will give you cheaper/other options.

Evil, since you are getting the same mics I have,

here are a couple of pics.

I think I could fit all the caps in there as well as the bodies.

I don't want to put a dent in anyones thoughts here, but here is my opinion, and we all know what they say about opinions....well anyway.

I too was going to go the pelican case root until I read something bad about it...  The problem comes in when you close the lids of the case.  It places pressure on the capsule pushing it in or out depending on the enviorment.  This constant pressure placed on the capsule is not good.  It can stretch the capsule.  Example, have you ever used a pelican case and had difficulty opening it until you opened the air valve and heard that slight hiss of the pressure equalizing.  That same pressure is what is pushing against the capsule membrane, and when the pressure changes, it stretches the capsule in the other direction until the pressure equalizes.  My thought is and what I read states all that pressure has to lead up to premature failure or change in sound of that capsule, meaning there is a change in the tension of the capsule.  So I keep mine in the original cases they came in or use one that is not air tight so that the pressure inside the case can equalize to the pressure outside the case naturally and never slam/ quickly snap  your cases closed, that instint rush of air against the capsule also isn't good. so take it for what its worth, its something to consider or it shows how truly nuts I am and anal about my gear. I have ( we all have ) invested to much in to our stuff and we all want to take the best care possible.  Peace!

Sounds like an old wife's (err... taper's) tale to me.  The pelican case will actually prevent changes in atmostpheric pressure around the capsule while the case is closed.  Of course, it will change abruptly when you are taking them out of the case if the outside pressure is different from the pressure inside the case.  Maybe that's the real issue?
