Topic: New taper with a few questions.

I've been toying with the idea of getting into taping for a while now, but have been a little worried about dropping too much dough into it. Last night I was browsing e-bay and came across a JB3 for super cheap. Seller said everything is in good shape except the backlight doesn't work. The backlight not working just means that I should get better battery life check out the auction:

So here is my plan for moving forward. I'd appreciate any comments or suggesstions.

I was thinking about getting an AT822 single point stereo mic. So I can run at822 > JB3 for now to keep my rig cheap and simple. Have any of you  ever run a rig like this? if so were you pleased with it?

If I enjoy taping alot I'll probably want to upgrade my gear within a year or so. If I do upgrade my first purchase would probably be the edirol UA5. I'm alittle dumb when it comes to this stuff. Does anyone know if the ua5 will conflict with the at822? the at822 specs say that phantom power will harm the mic. can I run the at822 into a ua5 without harming it?

My second upgrade would probably be a new set of mics, but that is probably way down the road. Adding a quality set of mics should leave me with a pretty decent little rig. Does that sound like a decent plan to y'all?

I've never heard AT 822>JB3, but I've heard 822>D8, and the sound was waaay better than I expected for such a small and inexpensive rig.

Can't go wrong with a UA5, so you're on the right track there. Yes, phantom power will damage the 822, but you can turn the phantom off on a UA5, so no worries.

Sounds like you've already got your plans in order, way to go! Welcome to an addictive (and expensive) hobby.

I agree with Nick - sounds like a fine plan.  The UA5 powers on with phantom power OFF by default.  As long as you don't turn it on accidently, no problem.  You may need adapters to hook up the 822 to the UA5, but I'm not sure.  At any rate, if you need 'em, they're inexpensive and easy to find.

It does actually sound like a good plan.  And once you throw in that UA5, good mics that will drastically improve the sound of your recordings might be a lot cheaper than you think.  Don't forget to add in the cost of all the accessories to any bugeting you are doing.  They can make a huge difference in your "taping experience".

Since the at822 is self-powered, grab a AA battery for the mic and your set.Hell of a lot cheaper than any pre (approx. $35 for the pair), if money is a concern.

i use a 822>ua5>jb3 to record drum classes and workshops.  works and sounds great.  your 822 might have come with an female XLR to 1/4" splitter. i use that to run into my 1/4" inputs on the front panel of the Ua-5.  if you get a Ua-5 with a mod other then the straight digi mod from Oade, the 1/4" inputs on the front will be useless.  the busman mod might allow the 1/4" inputs to remain active.

Thanks for the info josh. yeah the 822 came with the XLR to 1/4" splitter and that is how I plan to connect everything when I get a ua5. I wish I could be in SF this weekend I tried everything I could to make it happen, but I guess I'll have to wait for the midwest run in jan-feb to get my Tea Leaf fix. I was taping last night next to a guy running AT822 > Analog Cassette recorder... he swears by the analog "feel" and loves the mic. I'm sure it will be a great stepping stone for ya, but beware of the upgrade bug. I give you 2 months tops! hahah.

I haven't even taped a show with it yet, and I'm itching to get new gear. I'm looking an denecke ad-20 on ebay and it looks good. I've had to convince myself that I should tape at least on show before I buy a new piece of gear.

I play guitar too, and have for about 12 years. It took me a long time to get over G.A.S. (gear acquisiton syndrome) for guitars. I hope I get over it much quicker for taping.
