Hiding JB3?
« on: December 16, 2005, 11:37:46 AM »
Hi,
I am new to taping (having never taped before), and i am looking for a few tips on how to sneak a JB3 into a show. I've looked around these forums, but all i can find is ways in which to sneak a MD in... I know it seems obvious how to do such, as putting the device in the crotch will be the usual suggestion, but the JB3 seems to be so big, it will likely stand out.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone gives!  :)

Yep, that is what I do every time.  I carry it in a small camera bag with the mics.  With the JB3, cell phone, wallet, and a pack of smokes all on top I have the battery box in the bottom and they never find it.  The mics and optical cable are in the front flap which they never open.  They even hold the JB3 etc. for me when I walk through the metal detectors and my AD20 does not set off the detectors because I have it crotched.

The JB3 doesn't stand out nearly that much when crotching. Just learn how to position it and don't tuck your shirt in. You are good to go.

I believe it is a bad idea to show your JB3 when going in. I think some venues are catching on. Also, say they find out there is a tape from a show they recently have. In the lineage it says JB3. All they have to do is look at your "cd player" or whatever you have with you and they know you are planning on taping. People are ignoroant also. Many people believe the JB3 is a CD player and that I'm recording to the show straight to CD.

It's best to just learn how to crotch.

It's aluminum which doesn't set off the detectors.  Guns and bullets are made of nickel or whatever and lead.  I got into Joe Louis in and Fox Theatre in Detroit walking through a detector and have been wanded at several places with no issues.  Most security personel don't have time to check thorough enough to realize that the JB3 is a recorder instead of a CD player.  You really want to convince them?  Put a CD in your bag with it, even if it is a scratched CDR.  It's all about psychology and association.  I just got a new digital camera, I will take some pics. and post them in the gear section to show others how I get into shows along with my DIY stealth hat.

It's a non-issue - I always show it to them (if they're checking fanny packs) - it's an mp3 player (attach headphones to it).

Rule of thumb - show them what they're looking for, and they'll never find it.

Also remember that there's a crowd behind you waiting to get in, so security is gonna do as quick a check as possible.

No worries - I hide only my AD20 (stuffed down one sock) and the SVU-1 (the other sock) - everything else is in the fanny pack in plain sight. I've never been looked at twice.

As most people said before, just put some headphones and get in the venue with them on... The beauty of the JB3 is that it resembles quite a lot to a regular CD player. It should be the least of your worries when hidding gear.

Always take the initiative to show them to the security guys... They'll see there's nothing wrong
