PA vs. onstage mics
« on: December 16, 2005, 01:43:22 PM »
Can anyone comment on choosing a mic for onstage taping?  I am really thinking of getting a dedicated onstage rig, since I have a regular gig with a rock trio.  The reason I ask is because the sound at the stage lip and the sound in the section are different sounds.

I have read that a lot of people like LD mics for onstage. Before I d/l onstage samples (if you can point to some with multiple sources) then I'd love to hear comments.

it's true that a lot of people think LD mics on-stage.  but I also think that most of the mics that we, as tapers, generally use work very well for on-stage.

if you want to check out on-stgae tapes, almost every Club d'Elf show on the archive is a stage tape.  most of them are Schoeps, neumanns, now my MG's in there as well.  but every once in a while, Don also posts his recordings.  He runs Behringer b2 pro mics (they are LD mics), and he almost always runs blumlien.

for 12/9/04, you could compare these two sources:

(on-stage) Behringer b2 pro (blumien)> Ua-5> Jb3
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=20537
and my tape:
(on-stage) Neumann km184 -> Lunatec V3 -> Sony D8 (@48kHz)
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=20532

another date that he posted his is 3/10/05
(on-stage) Behringer b2 pro (blumien)> Ua-5> Jb3
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=23213
and the other
Schoeps CMC 6 (mk4)ORTF>Apogee Mini-Me @ 48-24>Vegas 5.0>SRC>44-16>CD Wave Editor>FLAC16
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=23657

and then if you look at the 2001 recordings, you'll find a few on-stage Neumann TLM170->Lunatec 316->SBM-1(Oade Mod.)->DA-P1 (run split omni or blumlein)

that should get you started with large diaphram on-stage recordings.  obviously the TLM170's are a good deal more expensive than the Behringer mics.  without knowing your budget, it's hard to give good recommendations.  there are a lot of options and lots of different kinds of LD mics, take a listen, and pick what you like.

everything sounds good on stage :)

I see. I'm gonna replace c4's in early '06, just exploring my options.

Yeah I wouldn't sweat it too much... any HQ condenser that we use will sound great on-stage :)

Right on, the c4's sound wonderful onstage, so I guess it can only get better. oh and thanks for the links Jason.

Just graduated so it's time to upgrade. I'm thinking audix micros, pelusos, lsd2, or even 480's. If studio projects would just get their hyper out I'd probably stick, but I'm tired of cards in crappy bars. But on another note, if I'm gonna get a hyper I want a good one.

I ran onstage Saturday night.  Split AKG 460's with A60M reducing rings and old style AKG 451 CK2 omni capsules.  Phenomenal imaging and very much in your face sounding!  The recording mics in the photo have the purple gaffe tape and the blue jacketing.

I'm going to have to do this more often...

for an example of what 480's can do on stage check out Bean's post of my Lotus recording from 10-26-05, its pretty decent  :)
