R-1 problem with a 4GB Sandisk
« on: December 24, 2005, 02:21:00 PM »
Hello,
I just recieved an R-1 as an early present to myself. Just inserted a new Sandisk 4GB standard card and it only gives me 1:54 recording time @ 24bits. I have formatted the card. Looking for some help. Thanks in advance.

That's probably because it is accounting for the 2GB file size limit.

On my 4gb card, when I hit record and look at the time remaining total, it always says 2h12min remaining. If you use that up and start a new recording, you will get another 2h12min (or in your case 1h54min, not sure why it's less. Mine's a Kingston card, maybe that's why.)

You probably really have 3:48 of time on the whole card.

I was hoping that was the case, but it stops after 1:54 of recording and says Media Full. My Firmware is 1.03. Would that be any problem?

Doubt it. That's the firmware I've got. Could be a dud card.

Have you tried the recorder with any other brand of CF?

The only other card I have is the 64mb that came with the player, and it works fine. So, it does point to the card.

if your not set at 96khz then have you tried formating the card using the r1?

The R1 only does 44.1 kH not 96.

Some San Disk 4 GB cards have switches on the side to select one 2 GB section or the other, or both.  This was because some cameras couldn't handle anything above 2 GB on a CF card.  Try setting the switch (if the card has one) to 4 GB Fat32 (position 1) rather than 2 GB FAT16 (positions 2 and 3).  I have such a card, it works fine in the R1 with that setting.

Yeah, that's a good suggestion. If it's a new card, and you can't get it working, try returning it?

I recommend Kingston 45x Elite Pro cards... that's the type I have, and have had no glitches whatsover. I have heard that others have had equal success with kingston, too.

i would concur with WiFiJeff's recommendation, completely. i had read that about SanDisk 4GB cards (some of them having a switch to determine what kind of partition). also, if the CF card has said switch, and you have to change it to set it to the $GB FAT32 partition, i'd recommend formatting the card as well (yes, formatting it yet again), and turning off the R-1 and doing turning it back on again.

i would have to think it could very well be a bum CF card, though, as even Edirol suggests using SanDisk brand CF cards for the R-1 unit.

Thanks for the suggestions. My card does not have the sector switch. I'll give Sandisk a chance to stand behind their product and let you know how they handle this situation.

My Kingston Elite Pro gets 2:12 per file at 24/44.1 on the R1 also...shouldn't the same size card get the same record times no matter what the brand is?

Are you possibly trying to use a microdrive instead of a flash card?  I bought a 4gb microdrive before i got the Kingston card and that wouldn't even format properly.  Now I know the R1 is not compatable with microdrives.
Really not very evil at all now...

excellent idea. in your shoes, i'd definitely be firm when contacting them, and hopefully they will honor the product warranty and send you a replacement.

Are you sure? It's a really small switch on the side, easy to miss and would definitely cause the problem you're seeing.

(in the picture, it's the white square dot on the side of the card)

If it's really a problem with the card, then SanDisk should provide a replacement, also their tech support is pretty good.
