Schoeps MS/Blumlein Bar?
« on: December 26, 2005, 11:34:36 AM »
Just picked up a pair of MK6s, so I'll hopefully be running M/S and Blumlein very soon ( :clapping: )

Anyway, does anyone know a way of mounting the 2 caps vertically other than the Schoeps UMS20 Bar? I would go that route, but $400 seems a little steep.

I've got a Vark Bar and SGC Clips, would it be possible to use these? Would there be enough room to mount the caps vertically?

If anyone has any better/cheaper ideas it'd be very much appreciated.

Just for curiousity sake, what the hell is this thing:

That looks like exactly what I'd need, of course being Schoeps it's probably $900. FWIW I've already ordered the toilet paper roll windscreen...

They stopped making that bar a few years back.  Not sure why, but I guess it had to do with manufacturing costs because I priced a few proto runs with a similar design and it was out the roof.

Not sure why Schoeps doesn't list the M100C as capable of being set up for Blum, but to me it looks like it would work perfectly.  Still pricey, but I believe the piece in your pic was right at $200.

It's pretty easy to setup M-S or Blumlein on a Sabra ST-2 bar.  I modded mine to shock mount it as well.  I can snap a few pictures later tonight or tomorrow if you can't picture it.  I'd still like to get the SGMSC or make something similar, but the ST-2 totally does the trick... even mounting the caps in exactly the spacing expected by the WMS windscreen.

I was looking at the SGMSC mount myself today since I bought Kwon's MK8 and need to test it out.....I may try building that home brew one, though.....looks like it will do the job plenty sufficiently (and for a lot cheaper than $143)  :P

Jimbo, another option is to buy an AMS22:
http://www.posthorn.com/S_ams22.html

You can run the actives right on this mount and do the m/s you are hoping for.  This is how I ran m/s on actives when not running the full CMC6 body.  And at $40 more than the SGMSC you get a multipurpose mounting unit, with shocks taboot.   If you want to recoup some of the $184 cost of the mount,  sell the A20S you probably already have and use the AMS for both m/s and standard stereo set ups.  Just thinking out loud for ya...

And if that doesn't work for ya, I may have two AMS22s for sale and also the infamous UMS20 if someone can tell me if a 19mm DPA standard and compact mic will not slide around too much on 20mm schoeps mounting equipment.

I actually have one of these that I borrowed from Escott a while back.....never would have thought I could use it with actives, though.....I'll have to check that out when I get home tonight.   Thanks for the tip!

Let the plastic mount grab the very edge of the active assembly.  The union where the cap meets the assembly will probably be sticking out about 1/4" for both the top(ms) and the bottom(mkx).  It doesn't look like it's a solid mount, but after you put on the windscreen it will hold well.

Tried and true method   ;D

WORD.....I'll give that a run when I get home tonight.

Any thoughts on how to do setup a Double M/S config?  That would be a lot of fun to try sometime as well!  The only thing I can figure would be to use what we've been discussing and have an additional MK-x running directly below and backwards.   Would be nice to have the three caps closer together, though, but it would seem cabling would get in the way of something.   I guess that's why they have their setup running with the 4v instead of the 4......

Do you still carry the schoeps ortf bar?  Put that on the bottom of the AMS22 and each mkx on the ends, then mount the mk8 on the top.  Sure the mkx cap will be facing 20degree upwards, but you would've probably put that angle on it anyway on the swivel mount.  Besides, that upwards angle won't affect the overal acoustics of the sound that much.

Take those three channels into that 744T and lose yourself in post.  You'll like it too much.

Does it matter that they are not on the same vertical plane?   Hypertechnically, I would imagine the three caps should be at the same location, correct?   Does it matter of the rear facing MKx is behind a little ways (since you're picking up the rear anyway)?
