Matrix???
« on: December 31, 2005, 09:56:23 AM »
I plan on running my first sound matrix on 2006-01-13 and 2006-01-14 but had a few questions first...

In a small dance-bar, will I get phasing issues between what my mics are pulling(SP-C4s/cards) and the soundboard feed??? My mics will be about 15-20 ft from the stage...

How bad will the phasing be??? Will it be noticeable???

Is there anyway of avoiding phasing???

Has anyone ever used a Mackie 1200 (8 channel mixer) or for that matter any mixer??? Is there anything I should know when using the mixer??? Will it have clean sounding gain???

I plan on running my mix about 3/4 mics, 1/4 soundboard; I just want to crisp up the mids and highs w/ the soundboard... Does that mix sound about right??? Any suggestions

Would I be just better to say 'screw the field matrix' and use two sources (mics>JB3 + soundboard>MD) and try to peak-match the two sources in post production??? Or will the run times be so different that it will be next to impossible to match the sources up after the fact??? Does anyone one know any good software(preferably free, ei.  shareware) for mixing 2 sources in post production???

If anyone has any feedback or suggestions, I'm open ears... I'd appreciate the help...

Thanks Folks
SP C4's > Hydra Silvers > UA5 (digi mod) > JB3

From my on-the-fly matrix experiences, 20 ft. is around the max distance between PA speakers and mics before the delay effect becomes too noticeable. Get em as close as possible.

Mixing on the fly is hard to do RIGHT.  That's why all these pro's are running cables to a van OUTSIDE the venue, it's too hard to hear over the actual sound at the venue. If you have to get this recording done right, mixing in the post will allow you to simply set your levels right on both recorders and worry about them later. But, it's a ton of work to synch in the post, search these boards, there's plenty of info on how to do it with different softwares. If you decide to matrix with the mackie, you will need some good headphones, some isolation headphones do a pretty good job of rejecting sound. Then use your ears to find what percentage sounds sweetest (don't think numerical values).
