How do you remove hiss on Soundforge 7.0
« on: January 07, 2006, 12:13:02 AM »
I taped a show with my computer and upped the gain so I could hear better and I can hear a clear hiss throughout the show. How do I remove or diminish this hiss with Soundforge 7.0? Any help would be greatly appreciated because I have never tried to reduce hiss before. Thanks!

Edit: PS... If anyone could tell me how we can get hiss through a computer recording with the following setup, please elaborate for me. Thanks  MXL 990-> Alesis Multimix8 -> HP Pavilion zv6000-> Soundforge 7.0... we've used this setup before and there was no hiss noticed.

Sounds like you recorded at too low of a level. When you brought up the gain, you brought up the noise floor as well, so im thinking that the "hiss" is a result of that..I use Bias Sound Soap for cleaning up hiss in my recordings. really nice program. you need to be really conservative with it though.Where were your peaks before you brought up the gain?..

The whole thing is always inaudible when it is done recording, so that is why I have to bring up the gain everytime. I just brought it up way too high I think and can't fix it now. Is that program downloadable? If so where?

I use SoundForge 5.0 and have found the noise reduction plug in to be totally awesome.  It's not cheap.  Also, once you get it, you have to tweak the settings a little so it's not so "heavy handed".  Otherwise it will remove some high's and the sound will be distorted.  If you end up getting the plug in, PM me and I'll send you my settings.

For a list of applications, most (if not all) of which support noise reduction, check out this other thread.  Audacity is the only truly free option.

The whole thing is always inaudible when it is done recording, so that is why I have to bring up the gain everytime. I just brought it up way too high I think and can't fix it now.

Two things:

<1>  Sounds to me like <a> you had a low-level master file, <b> you bumped up the levels, and <c> you bumped them up too high and want to fix the high-gain file.  Why not just go back and re-apply the gain to the original, low-level master file?  (Or did you overwrite it?  Oops!)

<2>  For the future, try getting your levels up high enough while recording so you don't have to amplify in post - MUCH better results.
