Topic: Fixing disorted vocals W/Soundforge 6.0

Just wondering if someone out there with SF 6.0 experience can help?  I recently ran a matrix of the Jackmormons in Portland.  The board feed was real hot and the vocals are distorted.  I'm wondering  how much I can fix that distortion.  I have SF 6.0 but nt really fimiliar with it.  The other problem is I am the only one who recorded (besides a buyable version).  And that version is not available(not yet anyway), and I suspect that the vocals are the same on that version.  any help from y'all would be great!  Thanx, Kirk

if the overs are short in length , you could try a clip restore plugin(I think SF has one??)..If the clips are too long, you probably cant do much about it.

is the distortion only on the vocal???next time you patch from that board maybe try an attenuator??

Thanx, sorry for posting in wrong place.  There are no clips to speak of, board feed ran to a beheringer mixer, it is just that the vocal part of the feed is distorted, Instruments sound fine.  I'll try and move post too. kirk

I think the mods will move it. you cant move it....Maybe one of the educated audio guys can help with that one. sorry i couldnt help more.

It sounds like the preamp of that channel got saturated. Not a brickwall type of clip. I haven't found a way to actually "soften" distorted sounds. At least not with good results. I want to say it is not really possible but I'm not actually positive that is true. I assume this was one short section and not entire songs or something?

unfortunatly it is the whole show.  I guess I knew that is no easy fix, but I think I'm looking for a way to "soften" the distortion or something like that.  Maybe some magic eq setting or something?  kirk

If it is the whole show, did you just have some levels too hot or what?

Chances are that the overdriven frequencies run the spectrum. If it happens to be only a small range that are effected you can try to work with a multiband compressor or EQ to reduce the effected areas. This has never yealded "great" results for me. I am only assuming I know what you have on your hands. I easily could be wrong.

SoundForge 7.0 has something called "Vinyl Restoration Tools" I've had varying degrees of success with this...

after all...record pops and clicks are often seen as clips...much stonger than the surrounding sonic energy...

Not sure if this is included in SF 6?

For Those Interested, I ran these setting and "made it somewhat better" , it's a starting point anyway.  It took the edge off the distortion and dropped it a little further into the mix, but did take away from the voacls a bit too, kirk
