Topic: Can I do something with a microcassette recorder?

I am new here (though I have been trading live stuff since 1999) and would like to try and record a concert one day, but all I have at a hand is a Panasonic micro cassette recorder and an external old microphone that seems to be useful now. If I use this tape recorder would I have a good result?

probably not- just not designed for this purpose.

Only if your aim is really good and you throw it REALLY HARD!

In all seriousness, you would be much better off finding an old Sony D5 cassette recorder.  With the low costs of digital recorders you could do SO MUCH BETTER!

I wanted to ask this because about four different persons have told me that microcassette recorders are better than the bigger ones (they told me that the micro ones, precisly for being smaller, capture a better sound). By the way, are the walkmans like those who use the reporters the devices you call D-5, D-6, etc.?

I bet those people are getting the microcassette confused with the DAT tape.  Both are much smaller than the regular cassette tape, but DAT has the superior quality.  Microcassette is great for reporters, taping school lectures, making notes to yourself - basic speech recording, where fidelity isn't as important.

And yes, older Sony portable cassette decks were called D5s.  Sonys older DAT deck is the D3, followed up by the D7, D8, D100 and M1.  All of these were about walkman sized (the D5 being a bit bigger).  Marantz also made very good portable cassette decks.  Both the Sony and Marantz cassette decks make VERY good tapes.

I find it hard to believe you were able to find four people who could give such stupid advice.

The D-x are Walkmen.  A D-3, the cheapest of them, will be countless orders of magnitude better than a [lower case d] dictaphone.
