Mic upgrade opinions!!!
« on: January 25, 2006, 03:38:27 PM »
I am itchin' to upgrade after havin' my C4's for a year and half. I have a about a grand to upgrade and I pretty convinced that I am going to get ADK A51 Tl's. I know I should hear shows w/ TL's and yes I have but I would like to hear some others opinions. Also no offense but I dont think AKG 391's are much of a uprade from my C4's to me ears. Please chime in.
Thanks.

Used AKG 480's. They pop up from time to time for around $900-$1000.

If you like the LD sound, you could probably find a pair of AKG C414B-ULS/XLS for about a grand.  Great flexibility with different patterns, more detailed to my ears than the ADK A51TLs.

Any team ADK folks have a opinion! I would like to buy something new and I like the LD's sound and the fact they have 4 patterns and I don't need to worry about different capsules(Cascade and Full Compass for $750matched pair). I mostly tape bands in small venues (matrix, stage, would like hypers) and I go to HSMF every year. How about the LD's at a festival? Omni's w/ baffle? DIN w/ cards, hypers?

That's it right there.  If your not looking for LDs and are happy with only having Cards then by all means you can not do better for $1000-1200 than  km140s without the actives.  that is what I did.  But beware, if you are thinking about LDs now then at some point after getting the 140s you will want the flexibility of multiple patterns.  So, I say buy some 140s then in about 6 or 7 months buy some 414s.  That's what really awesome tapers with huge brains and do. ;D

You can still upgrade your polar patterns by getting different AK capsules since they can be disconnected from the bodies/actives.

Also another future upgrade.

I love my TL's.  Lot's of options, great sound.  The only downfall is size and weight.  If you can get over that, I think it's a great option.

The only downfall is size and weight.  If you can get over that, I think it's a great option.

I love my matched TLs - they freekin rock.  But the size makes them difficult - I have to carry my mics in the flight case as the mics+mounts won't fit in my SoniCase with everything else...

If you can spring for AKG480s - get them.  Or get TLs.

AKG 414ULS!

You can get em used for between 900-1000 bones.  They are much smaller and lighter than the TLs...and sound better >:D

I stand by my original opinion though.  Go Neumann with the 140s,
Neumann KM140s>Bumblebee MIAGI-II XLRs>Lunatec V3>SD722
