NAMM06: New Sony flash recorder
High end portable kit to drool for 21-Jan-06
This year at Winter NAMM 2006 we had our first sight of Sony’s new flash RAM based compact recorder – the Sony PCM-D1. It is targeted at high end applications and priced to match ($1999). The system has 4Gb of internal RAM and accepts Memory Stick PRO (High Speed) for expandability.
It records at up to 96kHz at 24 bit and has a high quality X-Y configuration pair of electret condenser microphones. It does have a broad range of other sampling frequencies and bit rates to make the RAM go further. The PCM-D1 takes 4 AA batteries (as always NiMH recommended for maximum life) that offer up to 5 hrs of recording time.
The PCM-1D offers a USB connection to allow easy connection to PCs and Macs. The Sony PCM-D1 has a solid Titanium case (1mm thick) to give the unit a long life in harsh conditions (although it looks so cute you’ll be careful taking it out of the studio).
It has a high quality in built limiter to cope with those unexpected level fluctuations. It is expected to be shipping soon – expect further details on the Sony website in the near future.
