New DPA omni model (4090)
« on: January 26, 2006, 12:12:56 PM »
DPA just came out with a new omni mic, the 4090. I think this is designed to be their affordable full body omni??

www.dpamicrophones.com

The DPA 4090 is a high quality omnidirectional condenser microphone. Due to its uniquely natural and open sound, the 4090 is suitable for instrument miking applications in the studio or on the stage.

The 134 dB SPL handling means it can be used with essentially any instrument from acoustic guitar and strings to piano and wind instruments. Due to their remarkably linear frequency response in the 20 Hz to 20 kHz range, sound system engineers can also use these mics for sound system alignment, testing and tuning.

The rugged and compact design features a 5.4 mm diameter pre-polarized condenser capsule in a tapered body measuring just 12 cm (4,75 in).

thats like a 406x, with a mic body.

hmm, it does. Wouldn't be surprised if they were related.

But it doesn't have that high end boost of the 406x series.

I'll have to dig out the microphone Freq. response chart I got with my Earthworks QTC40s recently. I was amazed at how flat they were. The SR30s they fudge a bit because they analyzed them at -3 or -6 dB, so the frequency response looks better than it actually is...

they are related...heres the deal. Some engineers wrote in to DPA requesting a mic that performed inline with the DPA 4060/4061, but wanted a full body to look more"professional" as some clients had hard time taking a lapel mic seriously.  ::)
The 4090s have lower self noise .and while 4061 is optimized for wearing on the body, or placed on top of instruments, the 4090 series is optimized for natural sound recording. The 4090 is ruler flat up onto 20kHz with a little + 0.5 dB point, the 4060 has quite a peak at 15 kHz from + 3 dB which can be even made higher by using special grid. The 4090s will also take power from anywhere from 5v to 50v. via any xlr cable...

Wow! Nice...do those take 48v or 5v?
these are likely the predecessors to the new design.
If I remember correctly, these were custom 4061's, built by Bruce Myers.
