jb3 without a preamp (mic input)

Hi everyone, I did some searching but didn't know how to phrase my question in order to find anything:

Can I run two 414's right into a jb3 without a preamp? Is there a converter that will go: 2 xlr's into one mini plug (or whatever the jb3 uses?)

Would it be the same if I used my Mini Disc?

No.  The 414 is a condenser that requires 48V phantom power.  The JB3 doesn't supply that.

At a minimum, you'd need to have a device between the 414s and the jb3 to provide phantom power to the mics (a denecke ps2 would do this, runs about $100 used).

I STRONGLY SUSPECT that running the 414s into the jb3 will quickly and easily overload the jb3's mic preamp resulting in an unlistenable recording.

You'd be a LOT better off picking up a used digimod edirol ua5 for not too much more than the price of the denecke ps2 and adaptor cables)

Ah right, phantom power. I am in the market for a UA-5 if the price is right. There's one in the yard sale for 600 but I'm not sure I can spend that much. I've been looking on here and 300 for a UA sounded better to my wallet. I've missed a couple already.

Ah, good call.  I knew there was something I was forgetting.  I've updated my previous post.

Not into a jb3.  Into a laptop, yes.

if you're gonna be running some 414's do yourself a favor and get a good pre and A/D.

theres a stock UA-5 in the  yardsale right now for $200, if you know how to solder at all, you can do the digi-mod yourslef and use it as a standalone pre & A/D. when you come up with some more $ you can get it modded by busman2 and really improve the sound. for around or just under $400 you'd have a great sounding box, perfect for running with the jb3.

the stock model cannot be run without being hooked up to a laptop, the digimod bypasses the USB requirement for the outgoing digital signal. if you search around some for DIY digimod ua-5 you should see some pages with photos and step by step instructions on how to do the mod yourself. if  you don't feel comfortable doing it others have found electronics or other stores that will do it for a fee ($30?) when you get the busman2 mod done he will do the digimod for you if it isn't already done. i have done two of them myself and they are not difficult to do if you know how a soldering iron works. check out the team ua-5 threads for more info on the busman2 mods, or PM Chris (busman2) to inquire about pricing etc.
