I'd like to try the Knowles FG-3329 or for less sensitivity the FG-3742.
They both have omni pattern and a very flat response. The french research institute IRCAM uses Knowles FG mikes in preference over some 600$ sennheiser mini capsules they used before in HRTF measurement setups, which makes me curious about these tiny mikes. (2.5 mm in dia) I think the IRCAM, residing in the famous centre pompidou in Paris would certainly use DPAs IF they were better.
They mikes are around $20 each and need 1.5V power.
The reason IRCAM uses these capsules instead of others might be due to the simple reason of application.
U can't really say mic X is better than mic Y. It depends on application. Maybe for the taping of rock concerts,
certain mics would be better than others. The nature of the venue matters too.
DPAs may not be better, if the acoustic of the arena is inherently bad... If done well, the DPAs produce
a stunning capture, and if not, the result can go horribly wrong.
Not saying these Knowles capsules are inappropriate... but U might want to consider a host of other
factors too.
