Really Basic Mic config definitions
« on: March 17, 2006, 02:47:15 PM »
Sincere apologies if this is covered elsewhere (and I am sure it is in pieces), but I was hoping someone (or many someones) would be willing to give basic description of the various mic configs (I've seen that figure 8 pic and sadly, don't really get it).

I usually tape (yea all 3 of my tapings) with the mics up as high as possible while still pointing to the middle of the stack. And I usually aim the left one at the left stack and the right mic at the right stack, regardless of the angle.

But I see DIN, A/B, X/Y, ORTF and other various configurations. A short definition and / or description would help to clear my fog. Also why one would want to use that particular setup.

Thank you all so very much.

very interesting reading.. so for my AT mics, my first choice should be DIN and my second choice should be ortf.

now it told me that very bright mics like the ATs work best with DIN, but it didn't tell me technically why. Anyone want to venture an answer?

You may want to check out the following link... Its from shure for the bar I use but gives a pretty good description of several recording techniques.

Up close DIN seems to address any HF issues (brightness) very well(with acoustic music, anyway...)..HOWEVER...when you start using it in  diffuse field enviroments, the bass begins rolling off severely. I learned this the hard way! Up close, it is in my top 3 choices every time...far away...forget about it. For your AT mics , your first choice should be whatever pleases your ears and gives you the best results....everyones ears are different....learn all the configurations, pick peoples brains like Moke, Wbrissette, and some of the older guys...and discover your own preferences...there is no "sure fire" or first choice. Acoustic conditions vary...and with the varying conditions you can make an informed decision, rather than saying DIN is the answer all the time..

I've been doing XY for the last few shows with my AT853's (fair distance back in loud clubs) and have been very happy with the results, I can definitely hear the bass tighten up over past DIN tapes. Best advice is to try 'em out!

thanks.. it's all becoming clearer.. i have only used din, but just for grins, i think i'll try x-y.

i (95% of the time) tape in 300 or less people clubs, never more than 25 from the stack.
