Topic: JB3 Headphone Jack Issues

I've had my JB3 for a couple of years and I've started to notice some static in the headphone jack when I plug in the headphones.  To get a good signal you had to play with the headphone jack at times.  Well, I guess it has now offically lost the connection because I can't get any sound.  It doesn't effect the recording/transfer/etc.....  but you can't listen to the show anymore on the jb3 and I can't give a analog patch out.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so where is a good place to take it to for repair if possible?

there are some threads on nomadness about how to fix this... its more complicated than i could pull off, but you might be better with an iron then me.

also, you can always patch out (and even enjoy with headphones) the line out ports (there are 2 of them).  although there is no amplification.

Cool deal... thanks for the info.  I'll search nomadness and see if I can track down the thread.  Good to know about the patch out of the line out ports, never really thought about that.

yeah, what he said.  your better off giving a patch out of the line out anyway thatway you skip the rather crappy headphone preamp and send line level.  good luck with fixing the h/p jack

just make sure that if you are going to use the line outs for patching they are both on.  the default (well if it isnt it should be, since i know most tapirs have set it as such for battery conservation) has only port 1 working.  this is fine for me since i use it for the svu-1.  if you were also going to patch out AND use the svu, make sure you set the jb3 to have both ports active (i think it is the '2 channel vs 4 channel' option in the settings)

You are better off using the line output as the headphone out is very noisey I make a had phone amp with 20 db of boost for $99.99 very small runs off of a 9 volt and uses a burr brown opamp.

The headphone out is fine for headphone listening.  I've used it with several types of headphones and it does an admirable job of driving them, I wouldn't call it noisey for its intended use.

Chris, what do you mean exactly?  Are you stating that when recording the headphone out is very noisy?  I just want to get some clarification on this, because I find the headphone out with a pair of headphones to sound pretty damn good.  I personally would never send a signal to another recorder via the headphone out anyway because I imagine in that scenario it would be noisy.  For its intended purpose, it drives headphones pretty damn good.

The section you use to MONITOR a recording is called the monitoring section. The headphone amp and monitoring section on the JB3 is very VERY noisey when you listen back to the recordings the noise you heard during recording is not there. So i did a wide band noise test and sure as hell the noise floor in the monitoring section is very bad for hiss it has a very high noise floor.
Monitoring from the line out is much better. It has nothing to do with how it drives headphones more to do with the fact that the built in headphone amp sucks and is very noisey.

Gotta disagree with you here Chris.  Your test may display results that are less than ideal, but I don't hear it with a pair of low impedance headphones.  Forget the test and try some quality cans with the njb3, the headphone out is rated at 50mW and it shows because it drives my Grado's and Sony's with ease.  They sound great and even with the eq on, I don't hear a hissy headphone out...not even with my shures.

Dude i have been a sound engineer for 20 years I own several good pairs of headphones like for example the SHURE E5 and Sony MDRV-600 all of of these headphones work great. try this test crank up the headphone level to max or even close to max and plug a pair of mics into a preamp set the gain so its pretty sensitive but not so the electronics like the mic and external preamp are making noise then listen thru the headphones if you do not hear the white noise then I dont know what to tell you. And my WINAUDIOMLS program does not lie my noise floor on my computer interface is -140db noise floor so any noise is from the DUT or device under test. I am not just some guy that says something is noisey just because I think it is I have done the tests.
