Looking to get started for under $ 200
« on: March 19, 2006, 01:52:42 PM »
I have been looking around here and on ebay. What do you think about Giant Squid Audio Labs mic or Church Audio? Also what is a good cheap mini disk recorder?

I have a mini disc I pm'd you about.  The mics in question would be a good start with this deck.

church put a pair of his mics in the gear loaner program
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

Also I am going to be geting a laptop for college soon. If I had that, what would you recommend for mics in 200-300 dollar range?

audio technica 831 mics $130
batt box $80
Nomad Jukebox 3 $120

it's a little more then 200 but you'll never need any more gear. i'm still going strong with that setup. 4 years later.

the squids will be okay though.

It's a n00b rig, but I still love it, 5 years later! I have no desire whatsoever to 'upgrade'. I figure it does a good enough job doing the task I want it to do (recording the music) so i'd rather take that $1000 and use it elsewhere... ;)

This is exactly what I was going to post. I am very pleased with my AT831 mics. They are wonderful for the price.

You really should consider the JB3 over the MD. Although it is more expensive, it is much easier to transfer your recordings, is lossless, and you don't have to buy media.

I am looking for a new mp3 player anyway, so that sounds like a good idea,

They are great little packages. Got me through everything from acoustic duos to Nine Inch Nails. :)

Looking to upgrade to some DPA 406xs though.

No, you want the

SP-CMC-2

also known as "AT831" with no letters after it. get it as cheap as you'll find it here:

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-CMC-2

soundprofessionals.com is a great site with great customer service and prices. you can't go wrong with them.
