Edirol R1, stops on its own
« on: March 26, 2006, 01:53:31 AM »
Hi all, Greg here with more recording problems with the R1, looking for toughts and ideas on what may have caused this in hopes it does not happen again.

Billy Joel tonight, Syracuse Carrier dome, crappy taping seats, but I am in the building.

Start the R1 at the beginning of the show, Energizer e2 Lithium's on board, used once for right around 2 hours.  Simpletech GB CF card.  Same setup as used the week before for Queen (see Dime for the BT) with no problems, NIN with no problems (including getting shoved around a few times), and +Live+ back in February.

Check the deck a few minutes into the show, and it is no longer recording and off.  Turn it back on, check it between every song, and a few minutes later on, same thing, and again a 3rd time.

The batteries were fine, as every time I turned it back on it ran for a while, and even now (at home) it is running with no problems.

Anyone experienced this kind of a problem, where the unit is shutting itself off out of the clear blue?

Any thoughts or input is appreciated.

Thanks
Greg

Did you format the CF before the show?

I agree that the first step should be to try with a reformatted CF.

But I once had an issue with a set of lithium AAs (not the Energizers but a knockoff, though I had never had any prior issues with the cheaper ones, using perhaps 200 or more and getting about 8 hours from them generally).  The R1 shut down, would restart but die (usually pretty quickly).  The AAs tested good in a battery tester, but as soon as I put them into anything that would draw sizeable current they flaked out (had run about 4 hours before this happened).  I REALLY hope that Enegergizers don't have this problem as well, but the claim is that they are made in the same factory.

Did you take the batteries out and put them back in before you tried running it again?  Maybe they weren't making good contact?

Maybe a couple of small scratches, but thats because these mics are chick magnets.
Girls always up on Andy tryin to grab these mics, the scratches are from their wedding rings.

Yes, formatted the CF in the bathroom while getting set up

Did not touch the batteries from when they were last used 7 days earlier.  Everyone has stated 6+ hours on a fresh set, and they were only used about 2 hours last week.

Checking 2 of the 3 files, one is ~27 min and one is ~55min (3rd file needs another chkdsk)

Thanks

Since the R1 was turning off, then I guess it wasn't the CF format issue. However, since I started using mine I've always formatted it using the PC format instead of formatting in the R1. This probably isn't the reason why the R1 is shutting off though.

I can't comment on the batteries. I've always used rechargeables with mine and always recharged them up to about 1 hour before leaving for the show to make sure they were full.

All I can say is crazy stuff.

I am going to mess with it some this week (once I get the Billy fixed or written off).  As I have Mellencamp on the 5th and need a reliable recorder.

I thought I had seen some where on these boards that you should format the card in the R1 not the PC before use???  Ill have to see if I can dig that one up.

I only use Energizer 2500mAh NiMH rechargeables in mine and have never had a problem.   One thing I do do religiously is format the car in the recorder before each show. Don't know if this will help your situation, but the is the process I always follow and have never had a problem with my R1.  Matter of fact, I'll be using it this coming Thursday to record Ratdog in Syracuse!

Thanks for the offer, but I would go back to my M1 (DATs ready and available) before I would start trying to learn a new deck.  I used the M1 for years, and can run it blindfolded  :)

Good point, didn't know if you still had that around, I thought for some reason you used to have DA-P1 when bob borrowed your gear once... could be wrong.  I just know stealthing a DA-P1 will look like a severe case of elephantitus (sp?)

could it be 1 of 2 bad batteries?   I've had this happen with the energizer rechargables a number of times... 1 of them will be toast.  Like gotta throw it away "toast".
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

I had a similar problem recently with my R1 and a set of Energizer rechargeables where one of the cells went bad and caused the recorder to shut down several times. Even though the cells both charged up fine, they acted flaky when under a load. I'm sticking to fresh akalines every time now and have had no issues.
