My First MT Taping Experience
« on: March 30, 2006, 11:52:10 PM »
Two firsts for me tonight - a chance to try out my new Microtracker, combined with the "Sanjay Special" 3-wire box for my AT853's.

This was basically a test show - it was a free music festival at Nassau Community College on Long Island. In the past the festival has been 3 full nights, this year only one night, and not many strong "name brand" acts.

As I was sitting about 5 rows back, right of center in front of the right stacks, I used omni caps for the first two acts, and cardioids for the 3rd, just as an experiment.

The results were simply spectacular. Specifically the performance of the mics - from my seat the sound was loud but not uncomfortably so - I did not feel the need for earplugs. I recorded a solo folk act (Oscar Brand), a jazz/blues band (Harlem Blues and Jazz Band), and a roots music group (The Mammals). The mics had an openness and breath about them that I'd never heard from them before, well defined in every part of the spectrum from the deepest bass to the bells and cymbals. I give full marks to the mic mod for this. Bravo Sanjay!

I recorded at 24/48 on the MT, with a brand new Kingston Elite 4GB card. Total time recorded was 1:50, and the battery appeared to be around half used. I had no issues with the operation of the MT - the 3rd file stopped early, but it was probably my fault, as I was getting up to leave and probably hit the stop button as I was stowing the gear - I didn't have "hold" engaged. After using a JB3 for the past year, I LOVE those meters on the MT.

I tried out different sensitivity settings, going TRS analog in with a 1/8" to dual TRS adapter made from RatShack parts. I've since ordered the SoundPro dongle for that purpose. Other than the gain differences, I found nothing sonically to complain about. I did not use the +27 setting.

I had trouble believing the claims made for the 3 wire mod, but no longer. If you've been on the fence about it, DO IT!! It really makes a difference.

Thanks to Sanjay and Richard and all the others who have spent countless posts talking about these mods, and making them available to the group for a reasonable price.
