Matrix-ing a 24/96 file with a 24/44.1 file
« on: April 25, 2006, 02:53:53 PM »
So I had front row center for one night of Ratdog at the Beacon earlier this month and wanted to roll tape but didn't want to give up my seat, so I threw my mics on stage and ran from there, knowing that the vocals and keys would be weak but that the guitars, bass and drums would be sweet, which turned out to be the case. (Good night of music with Warren and others sitting in.) I ran 24/96.

Fldeadhead ran from the board at either 24/44.1 or 16/44.1.

I would like to combine these two sources...have Wavelab, CD Wave Editor and Wav Editor.

Can this be done and, if yes, how?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

I assume your final desired files are 24/96. Upsample the 44.1 file to 96 kHz. Create a wavelab montage and align the two sources, then mix to taste. Because the mixing takes place internally at 32-bit float, dither back to 24 bit using your plugin of choice. I know Waves L2 can dither to 24 bit. I don't recall if the included UV22HR can or not. Once that final 24/96 wave is saved, track as usual.
Out of the game … for now?

What MattD said.

Also, check out the Wavelab Montage tutorial Mike B posted for specifics on using WL's Montage:  http://www.sloppyart.com/wavelab_matrix/

Thanks Matt, Brian and Tim. (T) I will look this info over, but may need to follow up for additional technical info from you experts. I'm pretty sure Larry doesn't run at 48, so it has to be 44.

You may still get drift after the head is sync'ed, so make sure the tail is still in sync too...

yes, UV22HR can dither a file down to 24 bit (from internal 32 bit resolution).  the original UV22 could only dither to 16 bit, but the updated UV22HR (the HR stands for "high resolution") handles it all :)
