ISO: Replacement 'bolt-thingy' for Sonic Sense Mic Clamp
« on: May 01, 2006, 01:56:09 PM »
sorry, i have no idea what to call this thing.. ;)

anyways, i lost this piece off my sonic sense mic clamp - the black circular piece at the bottom-left of the picture below, that tightens the bit to hold that the t-bar, vert-bar, etc screws into.

wrapping my vert bar to this thing with duck tape is getting old, and i'd rather not waste $40 on a whole new clamp from sonic sense, so...

anyone have any ideas of either where i can get a new one of these pieces, or something clever to replace it with?

thanks in advance...

Try your local Ace hardware, Home Depot or Lowes. Take your old clamp with you as I think it's something other than the standard ¼x20 thread. They should have standard head bolts, socket head bolts, thumb screws and even a knobbed bolt like the piece you lost. If those places don't have what you need, let me know as a local independent music store has these clamps for about $6 or $7. I can ship the entire clamp to you for about $10.

You can definitely find *something* to replace that screw with.

The problem is the fact that it is a metric thread (mine is) and most hardware stores don't stock much other than conventional hex-head zinc-plated hardware in metric sizes.
Might be tough to find a thumbscrew or some other neat replacement.

I was having problems with mine in that the big plastic head on that screw was rubbinb against my t-bar, making it hard to tighten and causing my bar not to sit level.  I drilled/tapped the clamp to a 5/16" thread and replaced the screw with a nice thumbscrew from my local hardware store.  You might conisider going that route.  Unfortunately I don't still have the original screw, sorry.

I did this for a replacement thing for my clamp thing that I got from micsupply.com
Seriously, the band makes the music. Tapers just point mics in the right direction and hit "record".

That's good to hear!  The last patcher I had complained about my AKGs, fluffed schoeps for about 15 minutes, stayed patched in, and farted on me all night long.

Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

I took my clamp to the local hardware store yesterday. Not a big selection since it is metric as heikki mentioned - 6mm with a thread pitch of 1.00. Standard nomenclature would be M6x1.00, best fit was a socket head bolt since the outer rim of the head was knurled, not smooth. Even with that I'm not sure it can be tightened enough in the field without an Allen wrench to keep the insert from rotating. No thumbscrews at my local store but using a standard head bolt, a metric wingnut and a plain metric nut, I managed to fabricate a setscrew I wouldn't hesitate to use in the field. Total cost for the socket-head bolt 30cents, for the cobbled together set screw 90 cents. In both cases I found I preferred a bolt 25 mm in length. If there is a supply house near you that specializes in nuts and bolts, they will probably have a thumbscrew but for less than a dollar, your local hardware store should have something you can use.
