permanently change? as in, make it read-only? not sure if that's possible. pretty sure the tag will always be editable.

as far as just changing the tags - i know this doesn't do you any good since you're on a mac, but perhaps you can find something similar:

Tag And Rename 3.2

VERY powerful tagging software that saves tons of time.. i also use it for tagging my FLACs. extremely useful.

windows only, like i said.. just pointing it out as a frame of reference.

If your not dealing with a huge batch of them, iTunes is easy enough to rename tracks.

I tried that in iTunes but it only works for when the file is in iTunes and doesnt show up fixed in other programs. I only need to fix about 9tracks (about 45min each) so to re encode them all it will take at least 2-3hours and I am trying to avoid that

Did you try winamp?  From the playlist editor, right click > file info.

No winamp for the mac.
Unless they have a new intel mac that can run XP.

I use iTunes for mp3 in OSX.3.9

I just dragged a track out of iTunes and opened it in Macamp, Cog, and Quicktime and the info was still there. At least the title, artist, date, track number was there. I know that is not a help for you but I found it interesting that it doesn't work for you. Is there more info your trying to pass, or am I missing something?
ISO: your recordings of The Slip, Surprise Me Mr. Davis and The Barr Brothers. pm me please.

Gotcha,  but you can still whip the llama's ass with Macamp.   ;D

The dragging them out of iTunes fixed it but I had to actually drag it out of iTunes
