md disc to pc

what's the best way to do this? The recorder MD I have doesn't have a usb slot. I tried putting the disc into my Hi-MD player (doesn't record) and transfer it over through sonicstage but it wouldn't let me. Is the only way to do it get one of those cord that has 2 headphone jacks on it to plug it up through my mic in slot on the computer? Sorry for all the questions.

what kind of soundcard do you have?  no matter what you could go line in (mini > mini, or mini > rca) but you really don't want to that.  I've only done MD transfers once.  I went

MD > rca/xlr > V3 > audiophile 24/96 (soundcard)

if you can borrow a ua5 or v3 that would be your best option.

The simplest transfer would be Minidisc line out to computer line in and capture with wav software. Soundforge, Wave Creator 3, Audio Cleaning Lab.

I have transfered a ton of shows this way with soundforge. Not the best (it is lossy), but definately easy if all you have access to is the MD and a PC. It kind of sucks though, cause you have to play it back in real time.

i use a "home deck" that has an optical out on it... so i go TEACMD-H300>optical>mac G5>editing program (Cubase, DP< etc.) you can get one used for $60 or $70 or so... theyre well worth it for transfers!

I do digital transfers as well.  It is even easier to go MD(spdif out)> NJB3 (spdif in).  The advantage of using the NJB3 is that it doesn't drop samples like a computer does.  Start playing games or surfing and you'll probably lose samples every now and then.

I think with the latest version of sonic stage all MD recordings can be transfered via Hi-MD USB.

Only if you have the NH1 MD...which is out in Japan and (hopefully) will be out in North America soon.

If you're going to do analog transfers to your PC from your MD recorder (and it sounds like you'll have to), the most important requirement is a quiet sound card.  I have an M-Audio Revolution PCI card, which cost about $100 and is designed specifically for low-noise recording (they also make a USB version).  I just run a stereo mini-plug to mini-plug cable from the line-out on my Sharp MD's docking cradle to the line-in on the sound card.   I usually record into Cool Edit Pro @ 44.1/32 bits, but if you don't have a good audio processing program you can still get acceptable results recording into the downloadable freeware program CD Wave, which also makes short work of slicing the recording into tracks for burning to CD.  It won't be any help if you need to do EQ or other post-processing, however.

It is a good idea to keep other activity on your PC to a minimum while recording to avoid dropped samples.

So I broke out my MD last night for the first time in years. I had a chance to pull a board and do an aud. So I ran my Jb3 with my rig and took an RCA>mini>MD from the board. I didnt want to try to pull off a matrix because I was the only taper, and Ive never taped a Rap show before, so I didnt know if the AUD was going to turn out at all. I was correct, aud sounds like shit. It needed some sort of bass roll off or something. The acoustics kind of sucked too. The SBD sounds pretty good.

So now the question is: is it worth it to play the MD into my UA-5 with mini to RCA<Ua-5<JB3 Optical then transfer it via USB? Now that I have the ua-5 I might be tempted to do it this way, but I dont know if it would sound any different in the end. The 1/8th to 1/8th transfer has always worked in the past. I guess I could always do it both ways and compare them, but I dont have great playback gear so I dont know if Id be able to hear a difference anyway.

at least for me when i had the same problem was buying a griffen imic. has male (no home) imputs, usb, and line in, out, and mic lines. works great...
