Samson CO2 question
« on: June 05, 2006, 08:49:30 PM »
Howdy out there-
I am a newbie taper and am switching between an AT9400 (cheap 822) and a pair of Samson CO2's for the time being.  I have found on here that the CO2's are OEMed by Superlux (the SMK-H8K).  This mic is supposed to be a copy of a Schoeps of some sort.  My question is has anyone used these and how good of a copy is it in your opinion?    I would like to modify them to have a better bass response and am working on getting a schematic.  I have really enjoyed this site and have learned more than I can process and retain.  Thanks guys!!

I've used these mics with great results.  When I shipped my main set of mics away to get modded, I used the C02's for a few shows.  They are pretty clean mics that are not very noisy.  I've also used them onstage for drum overheads, they have an almost abnormal high gain stage before feedbacking.  Great value, at about $100 per pair you can't really go wrong.

Check out this show on the archive: http://www.archive.org/details/dflys2005-07-20  This was taped in a pretty bad sounding room, by the way.

Hope this helps.

Oh, one more thing, where are you located in NC?

here is a small Mp3 sample of what the Co2's can sound like.
I found mine on ebay for just under $60 new a couple years ago.

I am just outside the megametropolis of Hickory.

I agree...the CO2's sound good for a cheap mic.  I want to experiment with modifications on mine.  I used a set of SM-81's to do a show last night...MUCH better bass response.  Since I'm broke at the moment, I want to try modding the CO2s.  I'd also like to match them closer if possible.  Even though I can get the 81's at dealer cost, they're still way out of my affordability range at the moment.
