C4's or additional caps for se300b's?
« on: June 06, 2006, 01:46:29 AM »
I was looking at my long term options, and Im not sure Im in the AKG 39X series for the long run. It'll work for me for the next few years, but I have a little cash to blow on my rig now and I want to open up some options. I was thinking of buying some ck93 caps,  but I dont know if that will be the best bang for my buck. I have seen c4 sets going for about the same $$ as a set of 93 caps. I would have more options, and the shotguns and omni's are a little out of my impulse buying range.

Current rig is in sig line. AKG 391>Bm2P+ua-5>JB3

I have a juice box and PLENTY of batts as well as a suv-1 and big ass DPA windscreens. Satisfied with stand/bag. Satisfied with pre. Looking for other mic suggestions that wont break the bank but will add options.

 What would you do?

Thanks

While there can be no doubt that there are many microphone series that sound better that the AKG Blue Line (se300b + ck9x caps), you have to spend a lot more. The Blue Lines are excellent microphones; when taping a loud PA in less than idel circumstances, fnacy microphones aren't going to bring you that much more information.

So, buy the hypers. Hypers are really the gem of the AKG line. I would prefer the ck93 anyday over the neumann 150s or 185s. This cap will suit you well both in shitty sounding bars and big areanas. The only place I don't use them is outside or FOB in a good room.

For what's it's worth, I'm running both C4's and 393/91's in the field into an R4 lately, and I think I seriously like the C4's better when it's card vs. card. Also, having the omnis can be really nice at times (acoustic j-disc action can't be beat), but so can having the 93's for boomy back-of-teh-room venues. Thing is, I've been running 4-channels a lot, so that skews my thoughts on this (if you can run 4-channels, then owning 4 mics is better than owning just two). But if you're running only two-channels, you might be better off with a pair of cards and a pair of hypers. Tough call...

Sell the bodies, buy more ck9x caps and run them from a battery box :).

i think that both of these mics sound close enought that neither is an upgrade from the other on the sonic level.  the ture measure of these mics are what you want to do with them.  if you were just going to run cards - i would go c-4 and save a bunch of money and get the optional omni if and when you want to experiment.

that said, once you start experimenting, you will probably wish you had the blue lines b/c there is a bunch more options there... hypers, omnis, figure 8   and shotguns.

the blue line is definately more versatile, but you pay for that and the name.

if i had a very limited budget i would get the c-4's, as i really like what i heard from them.  if i had a little more of a budget i would get the akg blues because i like to collect caps.

I'll throw in my 2 pennies.

I just got the 92 caps and love em (also got a sweet deal on em).  My spaced omni pull is by far my favorite of the one's i have made.  IMO the 91 is the weakest of the bunch.

speaking of spaced omni.  What would be a good space distance for bonnaroo pulls?
Would 6 feet be alright?

ck92's where it is at.
I actually work for a living with music, instead of you jerk offs who wish they did.

bwaaaahahahahahaha.... that is awesome!

Just FYI, CK9x caps at fullcompass.com are $177 each.  And i think the fig-8 is pretty cheap too.  CK9x caps maybe cheaper on overseas sites.
