Should I use line-in or mic-in?

Hi,

I have a sony mz nh700hi-md recorder and a powered microphone from giant-squid-audio-lab.com.

I have read in this that I should use line-in on a mini disc because of some pre-amp on the mic-in

Does that also comlpy to my recorder?

I am going to a one day festival saturday, and I want to record the first and the last group, so I don't have time to play with it much before.

I will also record the other groups, so I have better time to play with the recorder with the other groups.

I only use the mic in for quite acoustic stuff.

Use Line-In as it'll give you more "powerfull" recordings.

Just make sure you have a battery box, if you do not they are very easy to build. poorlyconditioned has a great schematic on line here at T.S if you are not up to building in a pinch use the line input on that recorder, if it has a hi and low sensitivity setting for the mic input. That should only be as a last resort and remember, the higher up you get your mics the better your recording will sound with that mic.

I'm also wondering this myself.

In the past I have taped using Mic in and have had no problems as of yet - but do you suggest I try Line In next time??

My equipment:

Sony MZ-RH910 and (soon to be) Cardioid SP-CMC-19 mics (thanks to wiggle)

If I use line in, do I need to boost the recording level up a touch??

i am pretty sure the mic> preamps are only like 4 wts. you will most defintely want to use line in in every case except soft acoustic music.i also recommend using a b/b with a roll off.
