Pre Kit

How hard would it be to build my own pre from a kit like this.

Based on the picture, it looks like if you've ever soldered and know how to read an electronics diagram, you can do this without issue. It appears there is plenty of space on the board to work with.

the Seventh Circle Audio stuff sounds really nice, as do the hamptone kits. also, google "green mic pre" and youll see more.

That kit is the new version of Visivox's preamp.   Don't waste your time, it sucks balls.  It is a modified version of the Cana-Kit preamp that is availible in Canada.  The parts have a variation of more than 5% and in now way will your amplitude waveform look normal, let alone the distortion that it may introduce at high SPL's.  I bought visivox's SCM preamp and was more disaponited than I could ever imagine.  I hate that fucking preamp.

get a denecke AD-20, its essentially a pre and an analog to digital converter in one box, and runs off of 9v batteries or external power, they sell for about 175-200 dollars and would be a signifigant improvement over nothing, AND you could use the optical output of the ad-20 to run an optical input to the iriver

dont the irivers have an optical input?

that would be a sweet lil setuip IMO

yes it has an optical input, but thats a little more then I am looking to spend.

But I will keep that in mind down the road.

Yep. Beaner is right.  The mini-ad20 from sound pros is expensive, but well worth it.(it has 9v power for the mics you use)  To bad the gain is jacked on that unit.
