I've pulled a recording off my Series 2 Tivo, but at that point just passed it along to the interested party to deal with the rest.  In figuring out how to get the recordings off the Tivo, I found out "the rest" involves removing the proprietary Tivo "wrapper" to get at the actual content that's playable via non-Tivo players.  Lots of info and a few apps available online, but...I didn't save any of the links.  Sorry, not much help, I know...but hopefully provides at least a bit of context.

Alternatively, your friend could download the free "Tivo player" software (I forget the exact name) which will allow him to watch the Tivo recordings on his laptop without extracting the contents from the "Tivo wrapper".

thanks for the suggestion, unfortunetly, he cant even get them to play in the tivo player, it uses windows media and has some sort of codec issue I think when he goes to start the recording.

Oops, I missed this part:

opens it in windows media player from the tivo software

Hopefully someone will chime in.  Your friend might also check out the TiVo Community forums.

video/audio codecs are a bitch. Without knowing the error I can't help much.

One thing I do use often is AVICODEC (http://avicodec.duby.info) this software is great at identifying the audio and video encoding and has links to get the codecs if they're not supported.
