EQ or not EQ? (listen to samples)
« on: July 08, 2006, 02:10:04 AM »
I taped a show recently, that to my ears, has too much hi-hat, where it kicks in at around the 10-second mark:

So I tried a little EQ'ing.

I'll be the first to admit I don't know what I'm doing, this is just a little playing around in Soundforge.

+3dB boost 40-1.5kHz, -2dB cut around 2.5-3kHz

Sounds a little better, but still not 100% happy with the sound.

So I guess seed the show as is, and let people EQ at home if they want to?

I do some moderate tweaks and am far from a pro.  I kind of like hearing the high hat a bit more prominant.  Overall, everything seems well captured.  It may just come down to taste.  If you think it sounds better with the tweak you EQ'd, go ahead with it.  However, on a recording that sounds that good, I don't think people are going to have any problem with the raw track you have.

everyone has their own tastes and vastly different playback scenarios - I leave it alone unless there's a major problem. If I was listening to that sample on my good headphones, I'd tone down the treble a little, but on my little computer speakers at work it sounds totally fine, and less treble would hurt it IMO.

tweak it so it will sound good on good speakers and headphones.

im usually not too concerned with how stuff will sound on shitty equipment

IMO there's nothing wrong with the treble part in that sample. It even sounds a bit muddy/boomy to me so I would cut a little in the 125 Hz-1kHz region.

In the end, I did nothing to the recording, and upped it first on bt.etree, then the Archive:

Nothing really wrong with it, but if you're after a terrific sounding Rose Hill Drive show, 4-26-06 is the one:

I even have this on my iRiver when I'm using it as a portable music player.
