Schoeps Shotgun CMIT 5U Opinions??
« on: July 21, 2006, 08:15:25 PM »
I am interested in hearing opinions on Schoeps CMIT 5U shotgun mic. I have heard a couple of recordings with these mics and I am very impressed. But I should say I am a shotgun taper. I currently use Sennheiser ME66 short guns and love the shotgun sound / pickup pattern. The Schopes' sound appears more "real" to me.

Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.

Were did you find shows taped with this mic. I have been looking for some time and had no luck. So I would be very grateful if you could post a link to were you find the shows. Or can you hook me up with a copy if you have the shows.

There is a taper out of Staten Island, NY, Anthony Andriulli, that runs CMIT 5U->V3->PCM1. He recorded the entire Allman Brothers Band Beacon Run. His recordings are outstanding.

For the record, that mic is considered to be fantastic in tv/film field recording circles (for voice work, not music) -- there's no doubt in my mind whatsoever that it'd simply BLOW-AWAY your 66. In fact, there's a whole bunch of shotguns that'd probably be better than that 66. For some reason, everyone in video production uses that thing, but more and more, people are realizing there are better shottys in the same price range -- but I wouldn't know how they perform for music recording, I kind of cringe at the thought of that actually.

Dude, you are so wrong. I would be willing to give you a listen if you give me your address. You may cringe at first, but I guarantee when you hear them it will put a smile on your face. 8)

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the 66.  The CMIT is an incredible mic.  I'll go as far as to say that if I was doing small/med, med/large, large venues, this would be my only mic of choice.  In clubs, not such a good thing.  Of course, many of you know that I prefer the 81i over the CMIT, but that's with all things considered, not just excusively the sound.  If the CMIT was 2-3 inches shorter, I would trade up all my 81i-s for CMITs.

Production Mgr is going to go for the CMIT over the ME66, as lopng as you bill them the same rate for it   ;)

Yeah, I was talking about the 66 sucking. Sorry if that was unclear. My point was that EVERYONE has been using the 66 for so long that it has become one of the defacto standard shotguns used in film/video production -- despite the fact that there are WAY BETTER shotties available in the same price range. And, I think the CMIT (even the model under this one) is a good example of a mic that does just that -- blows away a 66.

My Sennheiser ME66's may not be the best option for film/video production so lucky for me I do not do film/video production. As for live concert recording, which is what I do, the Sennheiser ME66 microphones are fantastic and have provided me with some incredible recordings. But hey, everyone has their own opinions.

I didn't mean to say they totally suck, my bad. They obviously don't "suck" because production houses don't rely on gear that sucks that's for sure -- they need gear that ALWAYS works. What I really meant is that there are better alternatives out there these days.

have you considered the neumann KMR81i or KMR82i shotguns? just another option to consider and they are $300-$400 cheaper than the schoeps.
