Microtracker froze again (good news)
« on: July 22, 2006, 05:27:47 AM »
and this time it wasnt user error, well I think.
usually,it willfreeze if I cut the signal to it before saving the recording. fine thats how these 'ing cf recorders are.

tonight, I recorded on a 4g kingston card, and pretty much recorded to the limit on the card, lol, I had 38 seconds left! hit record for save, mt lit up and froze, boo! hopefully the recording will be saved but doubtful. the other set recorded and saved fine.

Seriously, the band makes the music. Tapers just point mics in the right direction and hit "record".

That's good to hear!  The last patcher I had complained about my AKGs, fluffed schoeps for about 15 minutes, stayed patched in, and farted on me all night long.

Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

Likely is a firmware issue, and/or a problem with not formatting the card in the deck after deleting transfered files.  Otherwise, it may be a defective or not right kind flash card (use type 1 only), or less likely a defective MT deck.
Firmware version 1.4.1b2 seems good, and latest 1.4.1b9 also seems OK so far by the few reports, but maybe too soon to know for sure

Yes it is. Upgrade and the problem will go away. Anything with 1.1.x was terrible. Put the newest beta 1.4.1b9 on, and you will be amazed at the difference ;D

fortunately, I always ran a dat back up, cause in the back of my mind I never fully trusted this bit bucket, hopefully the firmware update will fix all. Im gonna install the 4.9 asap.

I just thought firmware added cool little features, not the usability of said device, welcome to the machine!

reason 345 why TS is awesome!

I updated the firmare to the 1.4.1v9 or what not, and I was definately impressed. I was able to use the levels on it, and when it saved the filke, a small hourglass thing popped up. transfered the track and its all good!

You may (or may not) want to update to what looks like the final version of this beta firmware. 1.4.3 (no beta flag) was posted what, a week ago?  No new reported problems posted here but also no mention of any fixes in it different than what you have updated to already so it's not like it's a 'must have' update.  Your choice.

The current v1.4.3 firmware works great!  I have been using the Microtrack since it came out last Fall and thorugh all aof the updates I have had no real major issues to complain about.  I use an external A/D converter using the spdif input  connected to the MT via coaxial input so I have an outstanding signal to noise ratio operating at 24/96.  I eliminate the weekpoint that all other machines have which is in the microphone preamplifier stage which is typically a limiting factor in sound quality.  I use DPA 4061 microphones and through this setup I get consistently excellent results.

The latest firmware  update is very reliable and the only points whcih anyone can really comment on at this point in time is the auto file split function which to me is not that dificult to work around.  I simply manually split the files when the band introductions are made and miss nothing important.  That one foible aside I find the machine to be an incredible device that is possibly the best suited product for "stealth" recording available at this time.  I don't consider the SD 722 a stealth recorder due to its large size!  I also don't feel that spending the additional $$$ on the 722 buys you any better sound quality then what I have with my current set-up as the MT 24/96 is a bit bucket which is completely digital using the spdif input.  The sound quality is completely determined by the quality of my microphones and a/d converter which is every bit as good as anything that the SD 722 offers.

The battery run time of the MT 24/96 is adequate as most concerts are only 90 minutes long and since my microphones are running off of the /ad converter and not using phantom power from the MT the batteries are good for longer then my 4 GB card will go even if I were runnign at 24/44.1.  The 24 bit recordings make such an enormous difference with the increased dynamic range as well as allowing greatly reduced recording  recording levels as a result of the increased dynamci range. There has to be something to be said for having a rig that is compact and easy to use.  I love recording all of the shows which I attend but you need to be able to enjoy the show and not be a slave to the equipment as well!

I have downloaded close to 1000 torrents of live concert material in the past 9 months and have not heard anything that comes close to the quality of what I have been able to produce with this system.  Another nice thing is that since it is so small I have never had an issue at any venue either getting in with the equipment or being spotted using it during the show as the recorder is only about the size of most cellular phones which virtually everyone has at the shows.  You never see anyone have their phone confiscated even though almost all shows clearly indicate no cameras as well.  How many phones do not have cameras these days?
