mk4v and large line array PA vocal distortion
« on: August 09, 2006, 02:06:22 AM »
Man, I have been listening to my Happy Mondays ad nasuem from the Green Stage at Fuji Rock and I have noticed a kind of grating compression/saturation in the mid-high vocals.  The sound was great at the show but upon much closer inspection on the recording, it seems to be present - I do not think this distortion is being caused by the Lemosax or the modSBM.  The Line Array that was used was comprised mainly of horns, nothing I have seen used before in the US.  I noticed a bit of it on my Kula Shaker as well which used some of those same horns in the Red Marquee Stage.  The reason I say mk4v specific is that on my Wolfmother, running mk21s, the compression is not present (and I was much closer, tho running at shoulder height rather in the Kangol).

here is a pic of the White Stage running the same horns (the hanging silver ones on top, the Green stage had them set up in a line array):

Anybody have an idea of what I am talking about?  I know the mk4v has a peak to accentuate the vocals, but this is beyond that....in terms of the clarity giving rise to overdriven and over-saturated sound.

I didn't take a pic of the Green stage which had the horns in a line array.  The photo is just to show the horn stacks at the White stage, which were arranged in a line array at the big stage.  In fact, when I recorded at the White stage,I did not experience this problem.Maybe the mix?  I didn't seem to remember it sounding that way at the show.

Anybody seen this type of PA?

If you are hearing it only on vocals and horns it could very well be an effects unit being overloaded.

just because you stack speakers in what looks like a line array doesn't make it a line array.
