Edirol R-09 4gb Card Support Official?
« on: September 05, 2006, 01:40:38 AM »
According to this recent review (8/31/06) a firmware update should be out shortly to fully support 4gb cards in the Edirol R-09!

From the article:
Maximum recording time varies with the size of the card and type of audio file. Edirol says an upcoming firmware update will support 4GB memory cards, doubling the potential recording time.

Now, I read this in another thread in early July where it said 2 months so any day now? :)

I talked with a person in Edirol support today.  He said that they can't issue the firmware update until the 4GB sd cards are defined/standardized between the many manufacturers.  I have can only guess exactly what this means but he said it has to happen before Edirol can support the 4GB cards.

If this is true--and who knows, the person you spoke with may or may not be "in the know"--then that means there probably will not be official support for 4GB SD cards with the R-09. The reason being: it appears only the SDHC type have the 4GB size within its specification, while standard SD does not include 4GB size within its specification. And I somehow doubt that the SD specifcation can/would be "rewritten"... especially when they just made the new SD High Capacity 'format' specifically for memory card size purposes.

Other than the formatting issue, which can be easily done on a computer, I don't see any benefits to 4GB support.

I said this before in an earlier thread, but if anything it could introduce problems - i.e. the 2GB split issue. I'd rather just keep things the way they are (the ability to record one long 4 hour track) than have this turn into the R1.

It's quicker to split tracks than change a tiny little card and possibly drop it (and lose it/step on it in the dark), that's the benefit in my eyes.

Huh? You can still use 4 GB cards, no need to change anything. As of now the 4 GB cards work, and there's no split needed.

Some 4GB cards work, and some don't, from what I understand.

Well the transcend 4gb SD seems to be working perfectly. I did a few recordings of 4hrs using the internal mics, worked fine so far :)

I've continually used the Trancend 4gb card with no mishaps or header issues as some have had. I recorded four diffrent acts at a festival yesterday switching between 16 and 24 bit with no problems. So, so nice to "set it, and forget it" with this device.

Also, you can't format the card on the R-09, I would love to have that as I would then have no reason to bring my laptop on trips.
