Help with iRiver H320 and CSB's w bass roll off
« on: September 19, 2006, 10:41:37 AM »
Hey guys,

I'm kind of new around here and after doing a bunch of research I decided to retire my trusty D7 and move on to something better.  I ended up getting an H320 and last night I recorded my band practice for the first time with it.  I have a couple of questions about the recording settings, and I was hoping someone here could help.  (I wasn't able to find much by using the search).

First off, I do plan on upgrading to Rockbox very soon, but last night I recorded in mp3 (320kb) using the ext. mic in.  I plugged my CSB's in directly (no preamp) and ran a few tests.  I found that I needed to set the recording volume all the way down to zero.  Anything else was resulting in clipping.  My recording still sounds pretty hot though, I'd like to get it down a few more dB's.  Am I doing something wrong, should I be going line-in?  Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks!

Go line in.

Get rockbox installed asap, it'll allow you to record to wav, but...

read up on how to get rockbox installed carefully, I made some mistakes along the way with my H320 and it was hell (to an extent).

By the way, congrats on the H320, it's a great sounding mp3 player too.

Did you solve the problem of the db level???

I'm running CSB > BB > Iriver h120 rockboxed.

I did some quick tests and so far havent had to drop the gain that low (I set it around 16db). I hope that in a live environment it won't push my levels too low...

Anyone else run a similar set-up??

Do you actually power your mics? The small voltage from the mic-in isn't enough to properly power your mics, so even on the lowest level, the signal is too hot for your mics, they might even brickwall.
