DPA 4061 (HEB) "unmatched" solutions??
« on: September 21, 2006, 12:08:11 PM »
So I've had a set of HEBs for about 7 years now.  Last year one mic needed to be replaced.  According to Len, the remaining good mic was not in spec, or something like that, and could not be matched within the usual 1dB or so for a good hand match.  He said he would do his best to match the remaining good mic, but it would be at least a 3-4 dB difference.  So had him replace one to start to see what happens rather than starting with a whole new pair.  It's about a 5 dB difference.  So i correct recordings after the fact by boosting the one channel.  That's fine, but I'd probably rather have a better match in the recording itself.

So I thought of a couple of possible solutions, and wondered what y'all thought, and welcome other suggestions.

1.  Replace the older mic and hope Len can match the newer one.
2. Modify the HEB to microdots, get a DPA MMA6000 pre, and then find the right balance using the gain switch on the pre.
3. Continue as is adjusting levels on the PC.
??? Others???

I certainly know the cost of #1 ($400ish) and 3 (zip).  Anyone know how much it would cost to get the connector changed?  Posts suggest $150 from DPA; can it be done "professionally" for less?  I'm not the soldering type. . .  I've seen MMA6000 in the $400-$600 price range.  So it might be better to do #1. . .   But would the MMA6000 yield a nicer sound than the HEB set?  Posts suggest not. . . though I have brickwalled the HEBs from time to time with my M1 (mic in).

How does the MMA6000 compare in size to an AD-20/Zefiro InBox?

Thanks,
Dave

I saw a definite improvement moving two years ago from mic-in with HEB to line-in using the MMA6000, and would never go back.

The MMA6000 is similar in same size to the Zefiro Inbox, about 1 1/4" shorter.  If you clipped off the InBox's  battery holder and about 1/2" more it would be almost exact, except that the MMA6000 is solid where the InBox has a metal flange overhanging.

I had the same situation with CSB's when one went out, Len couldn't match the other. I did the normalize each side separately in soundforge for a couple months, then went with 2 dpa 4061's from the broadway sellers on e bay. they also are not matched. Again, if I feel I need to (I usually don't), I do the SFG single channel normalize on each side. Seems pretty easy to me.

my 2 cents
