Need suggestions for repairing "new" iHP-120
« on: September 22, 2006, 09:30:09 PM »
Hey all,

I just picked up an iHP-120 off of Ebay.  The seller said that the battery was dead.  I hooked up the USB power cable to the unit, and it shows one green light on the left of the face, but it won't turn on.  I've had it plugged in for a few hours now, and it still shows no other signs of life.

The hold switch is not on.

Any suggestions as to what could be the problem?  I wouldn't mind opening it up if I knew what to look for, but thought I'd ask here first since I don't have any experience w/the iRivers.

Thanks!
/J

Try disconnecting the battery and see what happens ,if there is a short in the battery then it might now power up its worth a shot anyway.

Thanks Chris,

I'll give it a try and see if it makes any difference...

*edit*

So I removed the battery, and now I get nothing when it's plugged in to USB power...

seems like the battery and charge light were the only thing are functional.

the HD has a little brown mark that looks like  maybe something under it got fried, but it's hard to tell...

not sure what to do next...

The other thing to try is remove the hard drive see if it lights up then if so you need a new drive if not you have a nice paper weight.

the iriver 120/140 doesn't take power from the usb port. If I understand it right you are actually not passing it any power.
You have to connect it to the wall power supply or an usb adapter like this one: http://www.boxwave.com/products/minisync/minisync-retractable-cable-iriver-ihp-120_357.htm

Well I think you are right in the fact that the USB alone doesn't pass the power.  The cable I have splits out to the mini-USB and the power jack on one end.  Plugging in the USB alone doesn't activate the charge light, but plugging in the power jack alone does show the charge light.

Still no luck on making it work though.  It still won't boot.  I may just pass it along for parts or repair w/the cable I bought.

Anyone interested?
