Should I increase my levels on the JB3
« on: October 07, 2006, 11:26:51 AM »
Alright guys,

I am headed to a little local "festival" and this will be my second offical taping outing.

Should I be increasing my levels on the JB3 right to the point where they are close to clipping?  I did so last time and I had to go to +12 (bluegrass-ish)...

I dont have a svu-1 and my UA-5 is on the way so for now what should I be doing as far as the levels go?

I am running
AT853 > battbox > JB3

EDITED to say:  I have read through the JB3 FAQ
Mics: Franken Naks / Cp2
Pre: BM2p+ UA-5
Recorders: Iriver

i personally like to run levels hot
but as you prob know the jb3 levels are kinda hard to work with, so you might want to keep them lowere
its better to have a recording you need to turn up vs one thats cliped and unlistenable
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

The hottest I've dared to run way +6 on a rock band about 20 feet from the stage.  No problems with clipping.  Like willndmb said, its better to run a little lower and amplify in post.

I tape a lot of metal, and I just leave the levels at zero.  This is probably anywhere from 20 - 40 ft from the stage.  The file in Cool Edit looks like there is hardly anything there, but when normalized is just fine.

does your battery box have levels?  if it does I'd give the JB3 +12 then control the dbs from the battery box.  attached is the pic that has been floating around indicating where you want your levels to peak.  But as has already been mentioned better too soft than too hot
Take care of the tapers and the tapers will take care of you.
