AES/EBU into microtrack?
« on: October 29, 2006, 10:47:42 AM »
hallo
i'd have the need to feed a microtrack with an Apogee Minime's AES/EBU output.
Do i strictly need an adapter like M-Audio CO3 or does microtrack SPDIF handle the AES/EBU voltage?
thanks in advance

I'm speaking with limited knowledge here  :-)  but I think you need an impedance matching cable.
AES is 110 ohms and SP/DIF is 75 ohms.  You can definitely do it with the correct cable.

The MT -may- work with a straight AES/EBU cable, terminated on the output end with an RCA connector.  It also may damage your MT over time.  But it may not.  To be safe, use a 110-ohm > 75-ohm impedance transformer, like the Canare BCJ-XJ-TRB.  If you're the DIY type, a parts list for one I made previously.  If you're the buying type, you simply need <1> an AES/EBU cable, terminated with XLR connectors, <2> the BCJ-XJ-TRB impedance transformer mentioned above, <3> a BNC > RCA adapter, and <4> a standard S/PDIF coax cable terminated in RCA connectors.

uh Brian... thanksalot for your reply!
i magically found the italian distributor for Canare at 6kilometers from home :)
(this means i'm going for the buying solution: i'm basically the DIY type, but when i record i want nothing but record, not worrying about issues and loose soldering)
