Equipment Malfunction
« on: November 06, 2006, 03:39:26 PM »
I've got a problem with my equipment.  It's happened twice in a row now.  First time was last Thursday with Devo, and most recently this Saturday with Keb Mo.  I used a different deck for each show, so I know it's not my recorder.  It only happened once each evening, and both times it only lasted for a few seconds.

The first time, it happened at the very end of the evening, after two plus hours of recording.  The second night it happened a little more than one hour into the show.  I started both evenings with fresh batteries and left after the show with plenty of power.

Schoeps MK41 > actives > NBox > (Oade mod) SBM-1 > M-1 / D100

I was hoping some of you smarty pants out there might be able to listen to a couple of samples and perhaps point me in the right direction.  I don't even know where to start.

As you'll hear, the Devo malfunction was far more extreme than Mo.

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.
:)

Sounds like I'll need to have Nick take a look at it, then.
Thanks for the help, muj.  :)

Devo is still around and putting on a great show.   Had a blast.
Bow Wow Wow -> A Flock of Seagulls -> Devo
Halloween night at the Greek Theatre.  They billed the show as "Ghouls Gone Wild."
Recording is over on Dime.

definitely a bad connection, IMO. What I would do to try to find the source is to set up completely for recording, plug in a closed ear set of headphones, then begin recording. wiggle each connection and see if you can find the sound. This may help you decide just where the problem is. I found a similar noise a few times and was able to isolate it to the following locations: 1) connection point of the mic caps to the wires 2) connection of the mic set to the battery box.

good luck !

How was Keb Mo by the way?
Pockets full of nickels and nothing left to eat, and I'm stuck behind a semi on Soniat Street.

Thanks, ilduco, for the suggestion.  I just gave it a try . . . no luck.  Wiggled all the connections -- but it all worked fine.  I'll give it another try this afternoon when I've got a little more time.

anodyne33, Keb was fantastic.  The whole evening was fantastic.  The show was at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, hands down the best sounding venue in L.A., IMO.  It was a very unique Keb' show.  The first show of three in the "Songbook Series."  If you want to check it out, it's over on Dime.  Sounds really nice -- most definitely one of my better recordings (but for the little problem mentioned in this thread).

Val,
Check your connection on the 9volt batt snaps you may find a loose one. Sound like one of the 9volt batts may have a bad connection.  Let me know what you find, I'll help you through it.

Hi Nick,

Thanks . . . Checked it out.  It looks fine.  All the wires appear firmly connected.  Tried to recreate the "noise" while wiggling the wires around -- nothing.

Bummer, was hoping it was an easy fix for you.  Perhaps its time for a tune up on it.

With the amount of hours I've put on this baby, you're probably right.  :)
I'll send you a PM in a few, Nick.
Thanks.

this is what i would recommend...

nothing better than getting the ole' mic setup checked by a reputable technician. i had len take a look at the hebs over a year ago (after years of use). he fixed a problem that a "mic tech" in hollywood didnt find (d00d said it was the capsule, when in fact, it was the solder where the minXLR and 2x RCAs meet. len replaced the cabling, shortened the cables (per request), and sent 'em back to me in a very timely manner. and the c422 visited the mic doctor in germany prior to ever coming stateside. it is the way to go, and it sounds like nick is more than happy to take are of ya...

do it - you might even have 'em back by thanksgiving 8)
