Got the h120 from a trade from a memeber here.
Since I got it I have had nothing but trouble.

Used it to tape a show the 1st day I got it. Went the whole show with no problems. Went to save it at the end and it froze up.
I let it run out of power(should have just reset the unit). Recording was not present the next morning(I ran another recorder infront)

So i played around with it and it kept freezing up. I updated the firmware and the freezing problem stopped.
BUT NOW i keep getting a disc full error. I did the scan disc and it seemed to be working.

So I did more recording tests and got as far as an hr. I thought all was good. Hit stop and it froze again.

Is there anything else I can do?

Does anyone think the Hard Drive is bad?

I really want to fix damn thing so I can run two recorders!!!!

Any help would be awesome.

it does sound like the symptoms others have reported while having a bad HD in their units. But I have no clue as to what it could really be.

I'm not sure why but mine freezes every now and again too, altho not very often and mostly when I'm playing flac files on it. (glad I never dumped my jb3  ;))

Chomps:

The 'disk space is full' is a well discussed error caused by deleting files off of the iRiver through windows (or whatever OS) when connected to a PC via usb 2.0.  The unit does not realize that you deleted them, and reports the space as taken up.  Delete files from the iRiver unit itself and you will not have this problem again.  There is a way to go into the iRiver menu and make it re-scan the space available on the hdd.  That will fix the problem.  Not sure exactly how to do the re-scan because I only delete files via the iRiver since I've known about this problem.  Do a search and you'll find discussions about how to do it.

I've only had the iRiver freeze up when playing (actually fast forwarding / rewinding) large FLAC files.  Reset has always cleared up the freeze and I never lost any files.  I'm not convinced that the problems you are having are hdd related.  I would reformat the hdd (via the iRiver firmware) and run a chkdsk r/ function with Windows if it were mine.  I'm thinking your problems may be over if you do that and only delete files via iRiver from now on.  Good luck!

where do I find out how to do this?

Backup any data on the hdd that you don't want to be lost.  Boot up to the iRiver firmware.  Hold the joystick down until the menu comes up.  Click on 'general'.  Scroll to format.  Click on 'yes' or whatever and let it do it's thing.  Then hook it up to your PC and go to command prompt.  Type in chkdsk e: r/ and let it do it's thing.  (NOTE:  If your PC recognizes it as a drive different from 'e', then type in that letter in place of 'e:'; you can just run chkdsk, but using the r/ will repair bad sectors if there are any.)

Assuming you're running RockBox...

- To make RB rescan the disk to figure out free space: menu -> info -> rockbox info    hit play or navi and you should see a scanning message.
- Don't use the voice option in RB as that is still a source of some stability issues. To make sure, clear settings by holding REC while booting (but after pressing ON)
- During playback of long big files, don't try to stop it when it is still starting to load a file (known bug there)
- RB always writes to disk when recording so there's no 'save' to be done, just 'stop' to write the header. If it failed to do that, open the saved file as raw data and set the samplerate yourself.
- latest RB version adds improved recording framework and better abort on low battery (still have to check how that behaves while recording)

If you're having CRC errors, it could be that the connection with the disk daughter board has broken solderings. Or the disk may be bad.

will the % complete change as it goes or will that update at the end?
I have had it going for about an hr now and it is still at 0%?

edit: just went up to 5%

After this is done I assume I have to redo the firmware and new Roxbox?

Nope, it shouldn't format anything.... but formatting is probably a good idea. Your firmware doesn't need to be changed though.

If you followed my advice, then yes, you did format before running chkdsk.  It's taking a REALLY long time, hugh.  If you give up on the process, just try running a basic chkdsk (no 'r/') and see if it goes by quicker and reports any errors repaired.  You will have to re-rockbox after every re-format of the hdd.

I did not give up on the process. I have done everything you told me to do.

I left it running when I went to work since it was at 55%

I really hope it is done by the time I get home!
